Juliet tightened her grip on the icy metal of the balcony as the darkness of the night consumed her. Her dark locks tousled in the soft wind as she let out a tired sigh. This uneasy feeling had been sitting heavily on her bones. One she couldn’t easily shake off.

“You’ve been standing out there for over an hour,” his cool, collected voice kissed onto her pores. Adrian leaned against the frame of the door casually as he absorbed the sight of the young woman in the chilly air before him.

She turned to observe the empty apartment behind him. “I’m surprised Ric and you were even able to pull yourselves away from work before 3am.”

He chuckled. A sound that birthed butterflies in her stomach like a silly seventeen-year-old girl she was not. “Are you jealous, Miss Greene?” Miss Greene. She never got over the way he’d addressed her. After everything they’d been through. After even being engaged, he always seemed to enjoy the taste of her name on his tongue.

She scoffed his comment away and rolled her eyes.

“Careful,” he warned teasingly, tightening the spaces between them.

“Or what? You’ll spank me?” She breathed in his cool woody cologne that danced off his crisp white shirt that was rolled at his elbows. His hair tousled boyishly in the wind as he draped his arm around her waist and tugged her gently towards him.

“Would you like me to?” He let out a soft laugh.

She pressed her reddened cheeks against his chest, the sound of his heartbeat comforting her. “I’m staying with you tonight. The house is empty since Nina already left for her summer camp and Jen and Mrs. Dawnly finally got on their flight to Switzerland. I just don’t want to go back there alone.”

“Thank God,” he admitted, “I prefer when you stay. The place feels more alive when you’re around.”

“Say that again,” she smiled as she pulled away, “I didn’t quite hear you.”

“You’re infuriating,” he murmured against her skin before pressing his lips upon hers. Something about this girl before him always made him cave in a way no one else could. She owned every inch of his heart, and breath within his soul whether she realized it or not. “Something’s bothering you,” he acknowledged, studying her face intently, “Tell me what’s wrong.”

She was about to deny it but knew it didn’t make sense to hide anything from him. “I have this feeling that keeps stirring within me, at the pit of my stomach. It makes me feel unsettled. And I can’t- I can’t make it go away.”

“Well, that doesn’t sound good at all. How about I make you some hot chocolate and scold you to get some sleep because you haven’t been getting enough lately.”

“Scold me,” she chuckled, heading back inside where he followed. “I’ll take that hot chocolate though.”

The silky duvet of his bed clung to her body and caressed her soft curves as she twisted comfortably. Thunder crackled through the dark sky above as bullets of raindrops slashed against the wraparound window. The blissful heat of Adrian’s bare skin kissed against hers as his arms wrapped around her. He planted a soft kiss on her temple as she shifted to close the spaces between them. She’d kiss him back if she hadn’t been so drenched in sleep.

The low buzzing sound of Adrian’s phone vibrating at the bedside table shifted her half awake. His voice was a low, tired rumble as he answered.

‘What do you mean?’

‘Right now?’

‘Where is he?’

‘I’ll be there.’

“What’s wrong?” Juliet knitted her brows, trying to blink the sleep away.

He sucked in a sharp breath before he prompted himself up and sat at the edge of the bed. “I need to head over to the Carlton.”

“Why? Is Finny okay?” she asked, pushing herself up and wrapping the blanket around her.

The sound of the doorbell sliced between the answer to her question and Adrian quickly threw a blazer over his black tee-shirt.

“It’s me,” Ricardo’s voice echoed, coming from the kitchen.

“Adrian-” she protested, confused at what was now happening.

“Hey,” he comforted her, pressing his lips onto her again and slipping his phone into his trouser, “It’ll be alright, get some sleep, I’ll take care of this.”

3:24am. Juliet stared at the time on the clock whilst Adrian left the room. As the men’s voices tangled in the nearby room, she frowned. She wasn’t going to just sit here and wonder. Her name was Juliet Greene. And Greene means go.

Throwing a coat over her pajamas, she finger-brushed her hair and left the room.

“Ric,” she greeted. Sleep was still thawing off his face but he dressed as if he had just finished presenting a serious presentation for the Queen of England.

“Julie,” he smiled.

“I’m coming along,” she stated before either of the men could get out a word. “And don’t say no.”

Ricardo’s face hardened as he drifted his gaze from hers to Adrian’s who was already wearing a frown.

“She never listens, Ric. Let her come.”

“Rude,” Juliet scoffed, “Hard to believe you kissed me with that mouth of yours five minutes ago.”

She began walking out with Ricardo, but Adrian held her by the elbow, gently back, “But, stay in the car. Please, love.”

“I love you,” she smiled, “But I make no promises.”

Heavy raindrops bulleted on the car as she let out a weary sigh. Whatever was going on, Ric was adamant about not letting her get involved. Going against Adrian’s wishes was one thing, but she never felt she could do so with Ricardo. Out of respect for him at least, she stayed in the car. There was an event taking place at the Carlton she noted. A prom. Or one that ended. Young girls and boys were glitz and glamoured up, scurrying back into their limos and cars to leave the event. She admired the shimmering gowns the girls twirled out in, but a sudden figure caught her attention. One that seemed so out of place, like mayonnaise on pizza.
