I paced along the room, listening to the repetitive tick-toking of the grandfather clock in the corner. What was taking Finny so long? He should have been here by now with the folder. This was years in the making. I sacrificed everything for this. Nothing should go wrong now. It can’t. It won’t.

“I’m here,” Finny said, pushing through the oaky door.

“What took you so long?”

I hadn’t listened to his response. My eyes were fixed on the folder in his hand. As it neared me, I felt the air surrounding me thickening. And my throat turning into a desert. My hands almost trembled as he gave it to me.

“Adrian,” he said, feeling the tension in the room, “We finally did it, we’re going to put a stop to this once and for all.”

I opened the folder. My heart twisted and dropped to the pit of my stomach.

“Finneas,” I began sorely, “Why am I holding an internship contract for this hotel?”

“What?” he knitted his brows, grabbing the folder from me and sucking in a sharp breath. “Oh.” Was all that left his voice, “Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.”

“What. Happened?” I pressed.

He ran a frustrated hand through his hair, “I might have grabbed up the wrong folder when I bumped into that girl downstairs.”

“This is not okay.” I hissed quietly.

“I know. I know. But, that was five or ten minutes ago. I’ll fix it.”

“No,” I stopped him, “I’ll find the girl. You get Ric and Donnie with the car. I’ll meet you outside.” Before opening the door, I turned back, “What did the girl look like?”

“Well,” he smiled boyishly, turning a bit red, “She was very pretty.”

I shut the door back. That wasn’t helping.
