Fatal Alliances: Chapter 16.5

You’re firing me?
Her words lingered in my head. The way her face fell, and her eyes dampened as she spoke. I’ll never fking get it out of my head. The alcohol burned down my throat as I had the bartender refill my glass. I don’t know how long I’d been in here. But I was trying to escape it all. Escape her. But she only kept haunting me. My interaction with her kept playing on repeat in my mind, no matter how much I tried to drown it.
“So how long are you planning to stay in here?” Ricardo’s voice smoothed into my ear. He sat at the barstool next to me as the bartender served him a drink. “I heard a rumor.”
I let out a breathy laugh, “Didn’t take you as someone who indulges in rumors, Ric.”
“No, but I found it rather interesting. It seemed like our pretty little girl got fired today by the crazy maniac hotel owner.”
“I don’t want to talk about this right now.”
“So you’re trying to get drunk to forget your mistake? And then what? You wake up tomorrow hangover with the memory still intact?” He arched a brow, “Come on, Adr, you’re better than that.”
“Just leave, I’m not in the mood.”
“Or what? You’ll fire me too?”
“Ric,” I warned.
“Listen, I don’t know what’s going on with you, but you need to focus and remember why we started in the first place.”
“I haven’t forgotten.”
“Good,” he said, exhaling in relief. “I don’t like it as much as you don’t. Also,” he paused, “Since we were on the topic of the girl, you should know that Finny is keen on maintaining a relationship with her.”
“What kind of relationship?” I asked, feeling something nauseating stir within me.
“Does it matter?”
I gulped down the remaining drink, “No.”
Ricardo studied my face intently but chuckled into his drink, “I see.”
“Finny’s soft. He gets attached too easily. Do you remember the dog he got for Christmas? He cried so much and never got over how it died only two months after getting it. I’m sure if you bring it up now he’ll get emotional.”
Ric laughed, “How could I forget Brandy the bulldog?”
My phone buzzed against the glass before me. I don’t think I recognized the number.
‘Vandermir,’ I answered cooly as I pressed it against my ear.
Juliet Greene sobbed into the call. Her words were inaudible and strained.
‘Greene?’ I asked, ensuring it was her.
Some part of me died hearing her cry. If this was about the job, she can fking have it back with a promotion if it means she’d stop crying. But this was different. Something was wrong.
‘A-Adrian? I – I…’ she sobbed continuously. She was struggling to speak, ‘Adrian- he…there was…’
Her voice broke.
‘Greene, where are you?’ I asked. Urgency filled me.
‘I –I – I’m at E-ellen Street…the old c-car tunnel.’
‘I’m on my way,’ I said and hung up.
Ricardo looked at me in concern. “What’s wrong?”
“I have to go. Something happened to her, I’ll text you the address.”
