BLURB
After being stripped of his title as a God and turned into a demon in the presence of his brother, Yuri was banished to earth to live amongst the humans whom he hates. 200 years later, a young girl shows up at his doorstep holding both his life and death in her hands whilst not having any idea of the power in which she possesses.
Ana.
A loud growl pierced the heavens and shook the earth causing me to stumble back. What was happening? Yuri’s jaw was clenched so tightly that his jawline should have been able to cut the wind through which he walked. Anger spilled from his eyes. I’d never seen a person with such a hardened expression as he walked towards Claude. God. I corrected myself.
There was something unsettling about the atmosphere around us. The leaves on the rose bushes and trees were all still and silent despite such intense arousal of the sky above. There was a storm coming, I could have felt it in my bones.
Claude chuckled in amusement as he stood and smiled, “My dearest brother.”
“I am not your brother.” Yuri scowled. His features were cemented in deep distaste.
“Ouch. Well, I mean not by blood anyway. Talking about your blood brother, have you heard-”
Without a second to spare, Yuri grabbed him by the throat, squeezing his words to a halt, “Why the hell are you here?”
He let out a faint, ghastly laugh as Yuri tossed him to the side where he pushed himself up whilst rubbing his sore neck. “You always like to fight,” Claude scoffed as he pulled out his two knives, “Guess that’s why they called you the God of War. Or wait, I forgot you’re a Demon now.”
A white flash of light flushed through the air where Yuri struck him with what seemed to be white fire coming out of his hands. It was all impossible. It was unlike anything I’d ever seen before in my entire life.
Claude groaned. In a swift second, he darted towards Yuri, striking blows to which were all defended. They both were incredibly skilled fighters.
“I’ve had enough of this, Claude,” Yuri grunted, almost annoyed.
“So you abandon us so spend your time here with these pathetic humans? That girl over there is nothing but flesh, bone, and a short span of pitiful life.”
Was that troll talking about me?
His eyes pinned against mine with a roughish grin, “And I can make it shorter.” He aimed one of his knives toward me, about to throw it when Yuri slammed his scythe against the ground. A blinding white light shot up where a large black bird flew. Time slowed. My vision faulted, it all felt so blurry. I couldn’t move or run or speak at that moment. I tried to turn when suddenly the wings of a large creature shielded me. The dark wine-coloured creature was unlike any I’d seen. At least, not in person. In books. In stories perhaps. This couldn’t be real. A loud growl escaped its throat as it turned to Claude. Its fangs glistened under the light and were perhaps the size of me. There was something about this creature. It turned back to me and locked its eyes upon mine.
Tomai?
I sucked in my breath in disbelief. I wasn’t scared. It was an odd feeling. Another bright light dispersed through the air. I tightened my lids, unable to accommodate this. Small hands suddenly pulled me down beneath the rose bushes.
“Oh!” I stumbled on my knees.
Tomai shook his head worriedly, “You have to stay down, Ana. You’ll get hurt.”
“Tomai… you…” I couldn’t find the words to explain what I wanted to express. His face suddenly fell in shame and disappointment.
I exhaled, pulling him closer and into my chest. His cheeks were soft and warm and marshmallow-like. He wrapped his tiny hands around me as I caressed his silky brown hair in comfort. “It’s alright,” I said, “You’re extraordinary.”
A loud crash hammered through the air. The fountain broke into pieces where Yuri threw Claude into. Claude somehow seemed to be enjoying it. My eyes couldn’t keep up with their movements. Blood leaked from Claude’s forehead when he clutched onto Yuri, about to slit his throat. Instead, in one swift movement, he slashed half of his hair off and kicked him harshly before him.
“Ana,” Tomai frowned in a shaken voice, “This isn’t good, they need to stop.”
I couldn’t agree more.
“Can you help them? Can you turn back into a-”
“No, not unless Master Yuri changes me.”
How do I stop them?
Dragging my eyes across the lawn, it fell upon the large hose hidden under the rose bush. Crawling towards it, I pulled the rest of the hose along with me towards the fighting men.
“Ana, what are you doing?”
I hope this works.
Taking a deep breath, I sprayed at them at the highest force.
“That’s enough, both of you!”
They stopped.
They stopped?
Both faces were drenched in confusion. They certainly didn’t expect it. Claude was about to take a step forward when I turned the water back on, aiming at his face. He sputtered back.
“Don’t you dare.” I threatened with my weapon in hand. “You’re both behaving like little children.” Yuri’s expression was stone-like and somewhat disapproving. “I’m sure there’s a much more civil way to settle this,” I continued.
A chain-like necklace appeared around Claude’s neck as Yuri let out a delighted scoff, “By keeping the dog on a leash.”
“How dare you use your magic on me!” Claude fumed in realization. He raised his hand to attack when his arms instantaneously fell flat.
“He shan’t be a problem anymore,” Yuri said, turning towards me and back at the house, “I cast a cuffing spell over him, he won’t hurt you or anyone unless I release him. I need to see what other damage he caused inside the house.”
Claude opened his mouth to speak when Yuri turned and began walking away. He clearly seemed pissed.
“You know,” I said to Claude as Tomai ran up to my side, “If you didn’t just try to kill me just now, I would have actually liked you.”
The house was in shambles. I gasped at the pool of blood before me, leaking from the body of Byron in the center of the hallway. Yuri knelt beside him, hand pressed against his chest, muttering something indistinctly. What was he doing?
“Is- is he dead?” I already knew the answer, I’d just never seen the body of a human so dead before me, especially in such a manner.
“No.” His answer surprised me. “He’ll be fine. He’ll regenerate his lost blood.”
“I don’t understand. Can you bring someone back from the dead?”
Yuri turned to me. His expression was hard but softened gradually. “I rather not take my chances angering the Goddess of Death.”
“Don’t worry, Byron a Bane-Guard. They can never die.” Tomai answered gleefully, “He’s indebted to Master Yuri for all eternity.” He noticed my confused expression on the term, “Bane-Guards are protectors within the realms, they usually serve a king or master.”
“If you’re wondering, I locked the old lady in the closet.” Claude nonchalantly voiced as he leaned at the edge of the doorway. I rushed over to the nearest closet and opened it to find Lou bent over and still. My eyes widened as I staggered back into a rock-like body. Yuri stood behind me and without a word knelt, placing a hand on her neck for a few moments. Subtle movement stirred in her throat and Lou coughed weakly.
“Take her to a room, she needs time to heal.” He instructed. I felt the venom seeping out of his words. His anger was directed solely towards the man unbothered at the doorway. There was something undeniably wicked and hateful flowing through his veins and I could almost feel it emanate near me. Turning, the blood which pooled around Byron was now gone and he leaned in a sitting position against one of the walls whilst Tomai offered him water. I lend Lou my support as I helped her into one of the rooms, leaving them behind.
“You’ll be alright, Lou. Just get some rest.” I smiled as I poured a glass of water for her, “I can get you something to eat if you’d like.”
“Maria,” she groaned weakly, eyes still closed in lucid in a dream as she reached for my hand, “Has your father returned?”
“Shh,” I cooed her, brushing her hair away from her face. She must be so confused right now. God knows what Claude did to her. That putrid man. Or whatever the hell he was. I felt incredibly agitated by his very presence here after trying to trap and kill us. I can see why Yuri has such an unusual disdain towards him. Give me strength Mathias for I shouldn’t have such rancid thoughts about that man.
With a deep breath, I left the room and headed into the kitchen. Maybe a hearty warm potato soup would help Lou and Byron, human or now, feel a lot better. Besides, potatoes never disappointed anyone. Did they? It’s quite hard to believe seeing how versatile they are. I was chopping the carrots when Tomai suddenly startled me.
“By the Gods!”
“I’m sorry, Ana.” The boy suddenly apologized in a deep pout, “I don’t like that man here. Master Yuri is upset and went to his room.”
“I admit that I’m not too fond of Claude either, but I trust that Yuri handled it well. Claude wouldn’t hurt you.
The boy nodded silently and walked over to the sofa where he began drawing in a notebook. Not too long ago, that little boy transformed into what looked like a bloodthirsty dragon, and now… It didn’t change the way I felt and how I saw him though. Somehow, my heart refused to see him differently from what I initially saw him as. Claude, however, was something entirely different. Grabbing the potatoes one by one, I threw them into a deep bowl and grabbed a knife.
Walking across the hall and outside on the porch, I stopped to soak in the image of him lazily perched on the chair. His head casually fell back as he closed his eyes, enjoying the earth’s sun. He knew I was there but refused to open his eyes. Instead, I dropped the heavy bowl of potatoes on his lap. His expression was certainly unfriendly and pissed off.
“Since you like playing with knives so much, I need these potatoes to be peeled and diced. I prefer it on the smaller side for the old lady’s sake.” I smiled cheekily as I threw the knife into the bowl.
“How dare you command me, human?” he growled, eyes narrowing. “I am a demon, and you will fear me. I’ve roamed the realms and killed thousands.”
“I don’t care if you’re a demon or King of all cannoli.”
“I could rip your throat out you disrespectful little-”
“Are you done?”
He gritted his teeth and clenched his jaw in response.
“Good, I just want my potatoes to be ready in ten minutes. Unless ‘demons’ are incapable of performing such mundane tasks, then I shall do it myself.”
With that, I left and returned to the kitchen. Perhaps it wasn’t wise to threaten a demon, but it sure felt good. I was immensely surprised however when he returned shortly after with the potatoes all peeled and diced as I requested. He stared at me as he placed the bowl on the island as if he expected a grand gesture of thanks and appraisal. I couldn’t help but hold a shadow of a smile as he scoffed.
“I simply did it because I wanted to taste how disgusting human food was. Pure curiosity for my own desire. Nothing more.” And with that, he walked out.
He was certainly- flavourful.
