BLURB

After being stripped of his title as a God and turned into a demon in the presence of his brother, Yuri was banished to earth to live amongst the humans whom he hates. 200 years later, a young girl shows up at his doorstep holding both his life and death in her hands whilst not having any idea of the power in which she possesses.

Ana.

After serving Lou and Bryon in their rooms, I headed back downstairs and slumped myself into the sofa. Claude had been outside for quite a while and Tomai was silently sleeping at the window seat. I watched as the minutes turned to hours and I shifted aimlessly on the sofa. Yuri couldn’t still be mad, could he? I understand perhaps mad at Claude, but at the rest of us? He hadn’t shown his face since. What was wrong with him? Worry plagued me.

I tightened my eyes for a few minutes, reopening them back to my same reality. I didn’t believe all of this was happening. To have faith in the Gods was one thing, but to see it manifest before you is an entirely different thing. Somehow, it worried me. Because with good there is evil and thus far the latter has been outweighing the former. I’m afraid. There is so much I don’t know. So much I don’t understand yet. Why did grandfather send me here? Did he know what Yuri was? He couldn’t have. He was horrible at keeping secrets from me. So why was I here? My stomach flipped. I felt empty. Confused. Alone. And most concerningly, unsure of what my purpose was now. I hated this feeling. This deep unforgiving swirl of confusion and sadness etched into my soul. And I missed grandpa most of all. He always knew what to do, what to say. He was my friend. My comfort. The only one who truly ever loved me. I missed him. Then. Now. Forever. This pain, the ache of his absence, it never faltered. Now more than ever, I needed to find out why my grandfather sent me here. There must be a reason.

“Ana?” Tomai’s voice daggered into my thoughts. He leaned and pressed one side of his cheek into the sofa’s handle where I was nearest. His soft blue eyes sparkled, drenched in worry. “You’re sad.”

I touched the side of his cheek. Soft. Almost newborn-like skin. He gave a little smile but the expression in his eyes remained. It was an impossible thought to believe him to be such a creature. If the story of Yuri’s banishment to Earth was true, I wonder how Tomai conformed to such a transformation. Nonetheless, what he is right now before me, was someone I found myself dearly loving. “Why are you sad?” I flipped his statement.

He gave a long weary sigh, “Master Yuri seems to be in a foul mood.”

“Isn’t he always?” I couldn’t help myself.

“Foul-er.” He stressed the ‘er’. “I wanted to go up and make sure he’s okay but he kind of scares me.”

“Do you think it’s because of Claude?”

“Maybe. Claude and Master Yuri were friends at one point and traveled together- along with the evil lady but he separated from them and went off on his own. This was years ago.”

“Evil lady?” I arched an eyebrow.

Tomai shuddered, “She scares me.”

“Alright, maybe I should check on your master. He did seem pretty pissed when he got his hair chopped off.”

Tomai muffled his laugh into the pillow as he cozied himself where I formerly sat. I stretched my legs, feeling an ache. As I neared the room, I mentally calculated if going to see him was the best idea right now. I scoffed. I couldn’t be afraid. Could I? No. That’s a silly thought. The air grew colder as I neared the room. I could just turn back now. Maybe he was asleep. Yes, no need to disturb him. I’m sure he wouldn’t want-

“What do you want, human?” his voice traveled through the crack of the door before me.

“Uh,” I said awkwardly as the door slightly opened. He sat afar, near the window, staring out into the endless darkness. His silver-white hair had been chopped so terribly that I almost felt bad.

“If you were coming in then come. If not, then leave,” he said coldly.

With a sigh, I entered. “Are you alright? You’ve been in here for quite some time. And Tomai thought that-”

He cut me a glance, tilting his head slightly in my direction. The violet of his eyes burned intensely, swallowing me whole.

“I was worried about you.” The words somehow escaped my mouth. I hadn’t meant to say it. I thought about it, but I never intended for it to escape my throat.

He turned back to face the direction of the empty, blackened sky. “There is nothing to be worried about.”

The sky outside held a solemn weariness and the leaves silhouetted by the moonlight burned a grave stillness. Something felt wrong out there. It was a strange sensation. Was Yuri feeling this too? Turning, he caught a glimpse of his reflection in the mirror behind me and let out a troubled groan. Was he upset about his hair? A small part of me found a bit of humor in the fact that a God could have such materialistic conflicts within themselves. I bit my smile. He seemed annoyed.

“Okay,” I let out a little laugh, “I can help you.”

“I don’t want your help.”

“No, but your hair certainly needs it.” I answered, beginning to look around the room, “Do you have a scissor?” I could feel his frown burn into my back as I opened a second drawer, “Aha!”

“Don’t come next to me with your small and feeble hands. My hair shall not be touched. Especially not by you.”

“Wow,” I rolled my eyes, “A God with a hair superiority complex. What? Did they kick you out of the Gods Club because your hairdresser didn’t blow-dry your hair properly?”

His jaw clenched. “You’re testing me, human.”

“You’re lucky I’m even offering to help,” I scoffed, “Unless you prefer to walk around looking like a six-foot-two, half-shaved sasquatch.” I tossed the scissor on the bed, about to walk out when he called back.

“Fine. I grant you permission to undo Claude’s interference with my hair.”

“Really?” I beamed, grabbing back the scissor and brush. I stood behind him and pushed his head roughly back. He groaned in annoyance, “Don’t worry, I gave my grandpa haircuts all the time.”

“I feel like I might regret this.”

“Too late,” I smiled, chopping the uneven side off. I didn’t want to cut it too short, so I simply tried to even on either side. Also, I was afraid he’d throw me out the window if I cut it too differently, so I left it at shoulder length. I sat before him to trim the edges and ends as he stared at me intensely yet with no readable expression. I tried not to look him in the eyes. I felt woozy in the stomach anytime I did. His hair was like silk beneath my fingers, there was no denying he was beautiful. Unearthly. Regal. Ethereal. Were all Gods this beautiful? This-

“If you’re falling in love with me right now, human, I’d advise you not to.” He lifted an eyebrow and soaked in my unexpected expression almost enjoyably. “I don’t fall in love, and I have no intention of marrying.”

The air felt like it was choking me. “I’m not falling in love with you,” I scoffed in defense, “What an absurd thought.”

“Beautiful. Unearthly. Regal. Ethereal.” He mocked, letting out a soft low chuckle that vibrated through my chest. My lips parted as I dropped the scissor. He stood, pleased, and walked up to the mirror to inspect himself.

“Can you-” I began, my throat dry and face flushed.

“Your thoughts are as loud as a screeching bird. From the minute you walked into my house you’ve been gawking at me. I don’t blame you though,” he said smugly as he kept his eyes on the mirror. “And no, not all Gods are nearly as desirable as I am.”

“In the unholy name of narcissism…” I breathed softly. He turned, smiling, quite content with himself as I stood. “Let’s not forget you’re the one who kissed me.”

“To save you from your depleting air.”

“I’d rather you let me die.” I scoffed, walking out of the room. Defeated. Embarrassed. Frustrated.
