Chapter 21 (Part 2)
Yuri.
“You asked to see me, Aunty Edna?”
“Did you hear from your grandfather yet?”
“Yes, he said that he’d be working late tonight. Is something wrong?”
“Tell me what’s your name, girl.”
“Sorry?” Ana asked perplexed.
“Just answer my questions.” The woman sterned.
“Ana Alois.”
“Good. What century are we in?”
The girl blinked at the bizarre questions and studied the drink in her aunt’s hand. Nonetheless, responding, “The 21st.”
“Good. What was Anthony Hamilton-Smith doing here two weeks ago?”
She frowned, “He came to return a notebook for Claudia.”
“Liar!” She shouted to her feet startling the girl back, “Don’t think I don’t know what you were doing. You. Little. Slut.” Her words came out like poison, and she stalked forward like a hungry predator. “I’m giving you another chance to tell me the truth. Claudia even saw herself. I warned you already. If you tested me, I won’t let that old man stay in this house. He’ll be out on the streets if you disobeyed. Do you want that?”
“No, please grandpa has nothing to do with this. And I am telling the truth. It’s nothing like that, or what Claudia might have seen. I don’t even have Anthony’s number.”
“Are you saying my daughter is delusional? Is she a liar?” She was a foot apart, seething.
Ana shook her head, “That’s not-”
A swift, firm, slap struck across her face. Rough hands grabbed her by her shoulders, shook her vigorously, and slammed her to the floor.
“Never in my life have I met such an insolent, impure girl like you!”
“I’m not lying to you, Aunty.” She said in a shaky voice. She was scared.
“Shut it! Do you know how heartbroken my daughter has been since?”
“I had no intention of hurting Claudia,” Ana answered, attempting to sit up. A sharp kick to her stomach caused her to curl into a brief sob. She grabbed a fistful of the girl’s hair and tried to drag her across the room. “Please,” she begged, trying to get away from her aunt’s grip. “Please,” her voice ached, “Not there, please not the attic. Please.” Tears streamed down her cheeks as she kicked helplessly, unable to stand the pain that was consuming her.
I felt it. I felt the pain flow through her body, beyond what she was able to tolerate. Something inside me stirred. Anger flushed through my veins. Endless. Still. Consuming. Why was I feeling this way for the girl? I didn’t understand why I was so bothered but I was feeling it. Feeling her pain, her hurt. That filthy woman- if I could hold her, rip her apart limb by limb. I’d start by crushing her tongue and watching her eye sockets explode, breaking each finger one by one.
Claude snapped an arm before me, preventing me from moving, “You cannot intervene.” His voice was raw and icy. It was a reminder. A slap across the face. I needed to detach myself. The echoes of her cries were beginning to embed itself in my mind. The woman, nearing the door, stopped when Ana pulled a stand to the floor- shattering a vase.
“You bitch!” Edna screeched and fell on top of the girl, pressing her knees into her stomach and fat meaty hands around her neck. “You stupid bitch. You stupid bitch. You stupid stupid-” she continuously venomed, squeezing tighter. Her hands moved frantically to remove Edna’s choking grip. Her feet kicked into the air helplessly. Tears escaping.
Something was wrong here.
The girl was…dying.
“Yuri,” Claude shifted uncomfortably. He felt it too. Concern and confusion plagued his expression. It was the very few times he let his expression show. “What the hell is this?”
I sucked in my breath. She couldn’t die. That would be impossible. I waited until someone kicked the door open. Until someone saved her.
Instead, a stiff silence drifted into the air. Stillness. Nothingness. Death had arrived.
Edna removed herself, wiping away the sweat that formed like an army on her forehead. The girl’s body lay limp and lifeless on the floor. The aunt locked the door in fear someone might enter and then began sweeping around the dead girl where her broken vase fell. She paced around the room, contemplating what to do, thinking vigorously.
Claude sat at the edge of the bed and observed the woman. “Which hell do you think she’s going to?” He turned to me, “Since it might be the only question I ask right now that may have an absolute answer.”
I neared the body of the dead girl and knelt beside it. Mathias’s gemstone flickered and faded. Perhaps I was simply seeing things now. I exhaled. This wasn’t what I expected when I entered her past.
“It doesn’t make sense, Yuri. If she’s dead in the past, she shouldn’t be alive right now in the present.”
He was saying something I already knew and had no answer to. Edna scurried to the bathroom and filled the tub with water. She waited until it was rim-filled and returned to drag the body of the girl in it. Claude arched an eyebrow as the woman struggled to carry the weight of the body. Water gushed out onto the bathroom tiles as the weight of the body sunk in.
He scoffed, “She’s going to say it’s suicide. That she found the body there. I’ll go as far as say that she’ll make up a story about how sad and lonely our dear Ana’s life was that the girl couldn’t take it anymore.”
“The humans aren’t that stupid anymore, they’re much more educated and advanced now to figure out the cause of death. If they do an autopsy- ”
He shot up and strolled slowly around the room, letting his fingers brush against the gold ornaments and frames. “She’s pretty wealthy,” he began in a matter-of-fact manner, “She can easily bribe the pathologist.”
“You seem to know quite a lot,” I said flatly as I leaned against the wall.
He shrugged a shoulder, “Sometimes I get bored in hell and talk to the damned souls- serial killers, murderers.” He grinned a bit, “Kind of a pastime.”
The door of the room glowed a stinging silver. Its power radiated toward me. If she was dead, there was no more to see. We should have been out of her past and back to the present now. I narrowed my eyes on the doorknob. Its magic was scorching beyond this. Claude neared my side, his eyebrows furrowed. In a swift moment, he kicked it open.
Her body lay limp and drenched as her grandfather sobbed over her in the center of an empty room. The plush rug beneath her soaked the dead water which clung to her clothing. Pain drifted through the air. This time, I couldn’t enter the room. There was a sort of magic preventing me from doing so. Magic that only a God could wield and possess. Dark smoke seeped through the cracks of the floorboard. The past didn’t want us here. It was a warning. A threat to go back.
I took a step to go forward when I caught the glimpse of a man revealing himself in the corner of the room. Mathias. In his hand, he held the God of Time’s stone. Past. Present. Future. -it swirled around the aura of the stone as he placed it into the pocket of his cloak and stared solemnly at the lifeless girl before him. How did he get that? He snapped his head towards me, noticing my presence. His pupils dilated as he raised a hand, menace edged into his eyes. The door shut before me.
Whatever happened beyond this point in time, my brother ensured no one could see.
“Was that?” Claude trailed…
“Yes. But he isn’t here right now,” A hard and heavy confusion lingered throughout my body. “It’s a protection spell he used so no one has access beyond this point. If we go further, our souls would be incinerated.” I scowled deeply. “We need to leave. My brother’s protection magic isn’t forgiving.”
I transported us back to the library where Claude sunk into the deep seat, heavy in thought. “If I’m not mistaken, that stone he held belonged to another God. And I don’t think you Gods are so kind to detach yourselves from it even for a second.”
Did Mathias steal it? Even for a moment was a great risk. But why? Mathias wouldn’t take such risks. No matter how devoted the human was to him, he wouldn’t risk using Septimis’s stone of Time to revive the girl. Did he go back in time to prevent her death? Even if he did so, we wouldn’t be able to witness her death.
