Chapter 27
Yuri.
The Gods do not marry. They do not take another as their spouse or equal. A God’s magic is wholly meant for himself. Power is not to be shared or transferred. The only way that power is shared or given is via a bond of commitment whether it be accepted or intended. And there was a reason the Gods chose not to marry, no one likes to share power.
“Yuriel.” Mathias’s voice stung me back to reality. Concern drifted across his features as I exhaled slowly and murderously.
I parted my lips, but no words were able to escape. Instead, a cold shudder drenched over me. The hopelessness of having my power ripped away from me. The one thing I treasured and cherished. It was gone. The majority of it at least. Inside that human.
“She isn’t aware.” He suddenly said, “She doesn’t know what she possesses. It was safer that way. For you. And her.”
I stared at him for a blank second, still processing it all, “Good.” My voice finally gave way, “It’ll be easier for me to take it back from her.”
“No.” His gaze sliced me, as he took a small step forward and dragged his few words towards me slowly to ensure I understood, “If you do that-” He paused, holding onto my gaze, “It’s the only thing keeping her alive.”
I was about to make a snide remark, but somehow- somehow– I couldn’t bring myself to say it. Instead, I focused my anger on my dear brother, “You had no right.”
“Would you have rather the High Court have taken it and does Gods knows what? You’re smart Yuri, you are aware if they took it that you’d be in a far more difficult situation. You’re my brother, I don’t wish to harm you, we have each other’s trust.”
Trust? He bonded me in secret matrimony to a human, who survives off my power, without my knowing.
“That’s rich.” I scoffed.
He frowned, “If I had told you prior you wouldn’t have agreed, you weren’t exactly your best and most rational self that day. And besides, there was no way I was able to meet you. They ensured no one met or spoke to you.”
Betrothed. A sudden knot formed within my throat and hardened, “Does she know?”
There was a lingering and stagnant silence between us. His silence was his guilt. Understanding, I dipped my head back and let out a soft, low chuckle, “You’re unbelievable.”
“Yuri,” he pleaded forward, “Do not harm the girl is all I ask. As per tradition, the power can be shared or given back but it must be mutual and agreed upon between both partners. And if she does choose to give it back to you then… As I said, it’s the only thing keeping her alive.”
“Oh?” I cocked my head slightly to him and arched an eyebrow, “You know what I think?”
He sighed as I began to stalk around him slowly until I faced his back and leaned casually against the balustrade where he initially was. “I think amidst everything that was happening, I think you failed her. And judging by the stone, you were always going to fail her and that would lead to her death. Imagine, the God you love and cherish so very much couldn’t help you in your time of need for hell knows what. She had so much faith in you. It’s ironic, isn’t it? Is your title simply just a title, God of Faith and Goodness? She talks about you like you’re the greatest of the Gods. And what did you do? You let her die. You’re no better than those who surrounded her. Petty humans you call ‘evil’ is laughable.” Anger was consuming me. I knew it. I felt it, deep in the pits of my soul, turning to an oozy darkness. My eyes dilated and my gaze burned into the tension on his back. He turned to me. And suddenly it fell. That wrath within me dropped as I saw and felt the anguish present on his face. Deep regret. Guilt. Shame. I pressed my lips into a thin line. Seeing so much of his emotions uneased me. I liked him better when he was a cryptic, soft, know-it-all. I’d enjoy my taunts back then.
“You’re right.” His voice was soft and aware, “I did fail her. But I’m trying, brother, I am trying. To make it all better.”
I turned my head to look at the sky on the left, “She deserves to know the truth, Mathias.” I wanted to say the words ‘about us’ but ‘us’ felt like a strange word to say. It was always I. There was no room in my life and comprehension for the inclusion of anyone else. Especially not a- a spouse. The thought of it irked me. It pissed me the fuck off the longer I dwelled on it. Hells, I would rather be skinned alive and bathed in shit than have a wife.
“Yuri!” the shrill of her voice rang through the air. Twisting towards me. Though she screamed my name, it wasn’t as deep or alarming as she would have liked. Her stomping footsteps neared the door when she pushed it open. There she was before me. Muddied and tousled raven coloured hair. She quickly looked around and brought her eyes back to me. Mathias had hidden himself from her view.
“I’m staying.” She firmed with a serious face. Or at least I think she was trying to be. Her pinkened nose scuffled up as she stalked toward me. With a finger, she jabbed it into my chest. She was quite a short and tiny thing I observed. “If you try and pull what you did to me back there again,” she warned, “I promise I will shave all your hair off until you are shiny bald. And no, I’m not staying because I need your help. I don’t need you or anything from you. I will do this on my own. I have faith and hope that-”
Was she beautiful? Maybe if she was a little quieter right now, she might be.
She sucked in an angry breath and stepped back, “Are you even listening to me?”
I tilted my head and squinted my eyes a bit. She was somewhat pleasing to the eyes if you squinted.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Because you smell like a fowl out of a cow’s ass. Go take a bath.”
Her eyes widened slightly, and she parted her lips slowly, shaking her head, “You’re sick.”
I half expected her to continue with a lecture but instead, she just walked out and slammed the door behind her.
“She’s upset” Mathias suddenly spoke and came back into view.
“Oh, you think so? I couldn’t tell.” I grinned at my brother. It quickly faded within seconds, “She’s been looking for answers. How long are you planning to torture her with none?”
He sighed, “I can’t- I-”
I snapped my head in his direction, “Oh you will brother, because I don’t plan to.”
…
Mathias left shortly after. If he wasn’t going to tell the human the truth then I had to figure out another way to get my power back. The sky rumbled above tauntingly as I sat perched against the wall. There was a feeling that drifted within me or a great many feelings. Confusion. Annoyance. Anger. I sighed as I noticed the trickle in the air before me. In a deep exhale, I raised my hand to compress he who held himself within.
Claude dropped to the floor but steadied himself straight as he soaked in my expression.
“How long were you there?”
“Long enough.” He answered with his lips pressed in a thin line. Sticking his left hand in his cloak pocket, he pulled out a flask and tossed it toward me. “Bloodwine. You seem like you need it more than me right now.”
I wouldn’t say I wasn’t grateful for it. But no amount of bloodwine could have fixed or made me forget what I was experiencing right now. Claude mirrored my sitting expression far opposite me. There was no snide remark. Not even Claude found humor in my situation. We sat in silence for a minute or two until he shook his head in disbelief.
“This is… unexpected.”
I hadn’t answered.
“If what Mathias said about the High Court is true then the Gods are no different than those who dwell in hell. They are no saints.” He frowned deeply, “I can’t help but wonder why they needed you dead or sacrificed somehow for.”
I shrugged. I hadn’t known either. None of it was making any sense to me. The pieces were right before me and yet, completely out of my reach. I was unable to put them together. That Highguard, Syn, who did he serve under? And all those demonic creatures, where were they coming out from? What was Mathias protecting me from? I shifted. I don’t even think my brother knew himself what he was protecting me from. He always had an intolerable knack for knowing things without reason. I wasn’t questioning his ability now either. My attention flickered to Claude. “Why did you come here?” I scowled, “You were looking for me in the Otherworld and I’m certainly sure it wasn’t because you missed your dearest friend. What’s the real reason?”
He sucked in a sharp breath and let it out through his nostrils as he turned to the side and scoffed, “Maybe I came for the wedding I didn’t get invited to.”
My jaw burned with tightness. His playful expression casually dispersed, and he continued coolly, “One of the creatures I killed back in my birthhell mentioned you.”
“What?”
“I was surprised. I thought you would have known something about it, but it didn’t seem like you had. It said something about the Demon-God shall not confine him. Said it wanted to kill you before the awakening. Hell, I didn’t even know what that meant nor the species of the creature.”
The Awakening.
The word was repeating itself too much to be a coincidence.
“Yuri, you and I both know this, but the Gates of each hell is secured. No foolish senator of the fifty hells will put their soil at risk of a war between the Gods. It’s suicide. I’ve travelled and checked the five line territories. All five Kings are content with things as are. So, wherever these demons and creatures are coming from, it isn’t from there.”
“The Darkest Hell,” I murmured.
He looked at me almost startled and scoffed a laugh, “You’re being ridiculous. That’s a myth. You know that.”
“Is it?”
He frowned uneasily. “If that’s the case and these creatures are roaming around so freely then what do they want from you? I’m quicker to believe that the Gods are doing something diabolical than believe in the Darkest Hell.” He stood, “But if what you think holds any truth and those things are after you, it’s best they not find out about your intended. She has your power, hence she holds your life.” Claude began walking out but stopped at the door, “Women, I’ve learnt, whether human, demon, or God; they’re all the same.”
