Chapter 30 (Part 1)
Yuri.
I released her hand and started out the door and down the staircase. I knew that voice. But she shouldn’t be here.
“Demon-God!” The Snake Sorceress screeched like a dagger through the hall where Tomai, and the others stood.
“Scream like that one more time and I will rip your tongue out and let it be the last thing that comes out of that slithering mouth of yours, Sorceress.” I warned as I descended the stairs. She snapped her mouth shut and scowled deeply. Her dress was battered and half burnt. “What happened to you? Why are you here?”
“If you think I want to be here by choice then you are sorely mistaken. But I am here to request your service. I do not know who to turn to.”
“Speak clearly, snake.” Claude pitched in tiredly as he leaned at the frame of the door.
She turned to him in displeasure, and back at me, “Something is not right in the Otherworld.”
Claude rolled his eyes, “Nothing’s ever right there.”
“Mock all you want but it is unnatural. Strange creatures have made themselves present and destroyed half the brothel. I had to use up most of my magic to get my daughters out of there alive. Many have died. I came face to face with one who spoke the ancient language. Their kind is unheard of. They moved merciless and vengeful.”
They attacked, destroyed, and killed? Those creatures were getting bolder by the minute. They weren’t just infiltrating the realm, but they were preparing to make a statement. If one group began with an attack, many will follow. Perhaps Mathias was right, perhaps this could have been a war brewing. But why? And who was in control of the attack? I shouldn’t be this concerned. This wasn’t my problem. This was a problem that the realms and the Gods needed to deal with. Her coming here was useless and a waste of time. I wasn’t going to be charitable and aid the Gods in any way. Not after what they’ve done to me. I’d rather see all the realms burn in hellfire than help the Gods now.
The Sorceress glared at me and sucked in a sharp breath as she spoke, “Perhaps it has more to do with you than with the Gods.”
“What do you mean?” I iced, taking a threatening step down the staircase closer to her. “What did they tell you?”
“They demand an audience with you. They demand your blood.”
“Master Yuri,” Tomai stepped forward in protest, “You can’t go, they’ll hurt you.”
The Sorceress chuckled, “How cute.” Her eyes glided behind me and flickered to where the girl stood two steps above, “And how interesting.”
I wasn’t sure what she could have understood by looking at the girl, but whatever it was, now wasn’t the right time to make things even more complicated by telling the girl about what Mathias had done. “Fine,” I stated and flashed her a warning look which she complied with, “I will go put an end to this.” I also needed to find out why those creatures were seeking me. What did I have to do with any of this? What was I missing?
“I’m coming, I’m in a murderous mood anyway.” Claude voiced and flicked out his daggers.
I turned to Bryon. “Stay here, ensure the seal isn’t broken.”
“With my life, my Lord.” He nodded as Tomai stepped forward, ready to join me.
“No, you stay.”
“But-”
I daggered my gaze at him when he silenced. I should have reconsidered turning him into a child. His childishness outweighed. A sudden thought crossed my mind as the snake sorceress made herself comfortable on the sofa. If the creatures were beginning to act now, there was no telling if there were any presence on earth and if they would do the same. One attack here was bad enough. I wanted no more. And now that the girl possessed my magic, it irked me even more. I turned to her, whisking out the dagger from my belted sheath. Stepping forward, I was at her level in height at the staircase. She arched an eyebrow, confused as I held it before her.
“Do you know how to use it to protect yourself?”
“From whom exactly? You?” she glared.
I frowned, keeping my voice hushed, “I’m serious. I need to know you can protect yourself.”
Her tone was bitter as her words escaped, “I protected myself all my life, Yuri. I had no one but me.”
And yet, you still died. My jaw tightened at her words. It wasn’t her fault. She was young, she didn’t have the strength. I had to trust that she could have protected herself now, and my magic. She clasped onto the dagger as her fingers brushed over my palm. There it was again. That Familiarity. It made sense now, why I felt like that. It wasn’t her. It was the magic within her.
Her fingers were small against the hilt, but she clutched it firmly. “Pointy side in the bad guy,” she said.
“Indeed.”
Claude followed me out the door and we headed to the well under the murky sky above.
“It could be a trap set up by the Snake Sorceress to get rid of you.” Claude mused as we reached the well.
“I considered that, but her aura was too flustered. She spoke the truth.”
He rolled his eyes, “I hated that ability of yours. Knowing what’s a lie and the truth.”
I couldn’t help but chuckle. A bitter laugh. The irony was that both the truth and the lie of the girl were right before me and I didn’t even know.
“Well, I’m feeling ticklish to kill something,” he continued and waved his hand down the well, “After you, my friend.”
We stood before the ruins of Brothel Casmeer, home of the snake sorceress and her children. The air was thick and stale and refused to blow in its direction. Whatever was inside, even the elements were afraid to touch.
“It could be a trap. There’s no one here. I expected there to be an army the way the Sorceress described the attack.” Claude voiced as he studied the emptiness of the burnt and broken brothel.
“They’re hiding within the walls. Feel them with your inner senses.”
“Definitely not what I intended to feel on a visit to a brothel.”
