Chapter 30 (Part 2)

Yuri.

The charcoal-scorched walls loomed before us in a broken maze of rooms. Glass shards crunched beneath our boots as we assessed the assaulted and dimly lit rooms. A silver moon hung at the open ceiling above us and streaks of red and yellow sliced through the sky, intertwining its hues.

The silence with aching and taunting and screaming in wicked whispers. It was a maddening sort of silence. One that I was familiar with. A silence that only could be heard before death.

“This reminds me of once upon a long time. All we’re missing is that wicked redhead.”

I flinched as he mentioned Roseil. He noted my reaction as he trailed behind, studying the structure of the walls around us.

“You know,” his voice itched with a smirk, “She was rather upset when you left. She almost killed me with the rage she had towards you.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

His tone cooled, and he exhaled evenly, “You know why.”

My jaw clenched and my fist tightened. This wasn’t a conversation I wanted to have right now. Not ever. Spinning on my heels, I glared at him as my words fell with a thick, poisonous thread, “She went too far ahead of herself. She was weak. I couldn’t return what she wanted. I’m incapable of that, you know it is the truth.”

He studied me for a moment and arched an eyebrow, “Are you?”

I scoffed and took a step back, “You’ve gone mad to question me about her.”

He chuckled, and his expression went perfectly wicked, “Oh I wasn’t talking about Roseil.” In a beat of a second, he throw his dagger in my direction and I aimed in his. The sharp objects swished past our ears and gutted into meaty decayed flesh behind us.

The creatures shrieked as the blades plunged into each of their heads. It staggered back but I ripped out Claude’s dagger from the creature behind me. He mirrored my movements. The creature behind him let out an unholy scream. A signal for more to appear. In a matter of seconds, the room was filled with thick shadowy smoke at our feet and whatever those creatures were, more appeared. Tall three-legged demonic creature, with his body mummified and head a thick swollen, and rotted featureless flesh. They snarled at us, over fifty, showing their yellow pointy teeth.

Claude’s features seemed more amused as he darted forward attacking them effortlessly. “A bargain bet, old friend?” he laughed as he ripped the head off one and kicked into the stomach of another. Its meaty entrails plunging out.

I twisted the neck of two at my side and dismembered the legs of two nearby. I couldn’t help but chuckle at his amusement and request for a bet bargain at this time. “The terms?” I gave a low laugh as I ripped thick fleshy organs out with my bare hands.

“One with the most kills gets requaitis.” I recalled the demonic term. One we’ve used too many times that often ended in more bloodshed. Requaitis; a request that must be carried out. I moved as fast as I could, bathing in the blood of the creatures I now killed. Twelve. Eighteen. I was losing count but knew my numbers were ahead. One might think it might be sick to make a bet regarding death, but death I’ve learnt over time was the only constant.

Sweat beaded at my temples and the dark walls were now painted red. I knew this wasn’t over. I felt it within my blood and bones as the bodies lay lifeless and broken on the floor. A sudden déjà vu feeling twisted within me. The battle in Sinder resurfaced and jolted throughout me but I pushed the memory away. Dark grey clouds began hanging ominously above. I climbed down the steep broken staircase, out of the brothel as Claude followed behind. Three large figures twisted from the shadows in the distance, through the thick forest as rain began bleeding softly from the highland.

“What the fk is that?” Claude swore under his breath as his brows knitted together towards the shadowy figures.

My lips thinned as the demonic creature revealed itself, guarded by two other slightly smaller creatures of the same breed at either side, “Erocotx.”

Demon-God,” he slithered out to me, a tone of venomous distaste, “Charmed you remember my name.”

“Well, you have a face that’s hard to forget.” I scoffed. Erocotx twisted and plunged towards me. Claude shuffled at my side and darted toward the other creatures. Power radiated from him as I held my scythe firmly and sliced into its thick toad-like skin. It was more calloused than it looked. His large tail gripped me by the foot and slammed me back.

Quickly finding my stance again, I shot up and conjured my magic. I didn’t have my full power but I had enough and harnessed enough demon magic to destroy whatever was in my path. A blanket of shadowy darkness seeped around us. I felt the darkness within me. My soul and my bone reveled in the lush wickedness that scorched inside. Perhaps I was more demon than I was God. For I was the fallen, but I will never bow.

A flash of terror glassed over Erocotx eyes, unfamiliar with the torturous illusion I was now creating. With gritted fangs, it snarled, “I shall never bow to you. Not then, not now, not ever. I will not go back to having no freedom!”

I attempted to stifle the air from inside our barrier for him but he dashed towards me. I blocked the attack, sending him crashing back. He hissed getting up, a promise of murder within his eyes.

“You request an audience of me to threaten and speak nonsense before I kill you?” I scowled, “You speak as if you know me. Yet I cannot recall a creature such as yourself. Why is your kind here? What is the purpose of your infiltration?”

He chuckled, showing its sliced tongue, “If by now you do not know the truth, then I pity you.” Pounding on all fours upon the floor, in a stance to charge forward he let out a mucus-filled laugh, “But not as much as I pity that human girl and your weaklings back at your earthy home above.”

I sliced forward. My fingers dug into its throat as I twisted its neck. “If you dare even touch her-”

“Touch?” he spat as he tried to kick, but I dug my fingers even deeper causing him to restrain, “My creatures will do far worse than just touch her, my Lord.”

My stomach twisted with his words. The damned creature sensed my discomfort and continued, “We will sink our fangs into her bosom and insert our seven swollen cocks-”

I didn’t give him time to finish. Rage burned into me as hellfire blazed inside him. I twisted his neck and broke one dark horn off his head as he let out a bloodcurdling unholy scream. It was a signal. A signal for more to come. He was summoning more of his kind. He twisted his eyes at me and snapped but I held my ground.

An insidious smile plagued across his face, “I assume she’s dead by now at the hands of my creatures. Or parts.”

My magic broke. We were shifted back to the field where we initially were. Claude grunted as he dodged the attacks of the two creatures. Erocotx twisted. His words held truth but uncertainty. If this was true…no.

My fisted hand burned in wrath. I hadn’t felt anything like this before. This rage, it was consuming me. My fist pounded into his fangs, breaking them upon impact. Blood stained my hand. Yet, I was numb. Angry. Confused by this mixture of emotions. I shouted demonic curses as I reached for the softest part of his tongue, ripping it entirely out.

Shocked, he staggered back. Blood leaked at the corner of his lips. Five new creatures like the two Claude was battling immerged from the mud. I burned a barrier of hellfire around Claude and me. A small but deep wound covered his jawline. He needed to go back. Erocotx threats held truth, but they did not come to pass yet. He needed to go back to protect her. She couldn’t fight these things on her own. I wasn’t even sure if I could fight it. As much as I believed in Claude’s skillset, I couldn’t take the risk of leaving him here, it would be a risk of suicide.

“You need to go back to the house.”

He snapped his neck in my direction, “What? Are you insane? We’re surrounded by eight demonic creatures with the strength of a God, and you want me to leave you here?”

Requaitis.

Shock laced over his features as I said the word. “You can’t.”

“I claim my demand.”

“Yuri, those things will kill you.” He warned with knitted eyebrows.

“I abandoned you once, it would make us even.”

He flinched in disbelief, “Is that what you think? I am no Roseil, I don’t seek revenge. I consider you like a brother.”

“Claude, please.” I firmed, “Go. Those above are in danger.”

Understanding fogged his features. “The girl?”

The fire around us was scorching and growing thicker as the creatures growled around behind it.

“If you’re not back by sunset, fk your requaitis because I’m coming back, Demon-God.”

With a firm grip on my scythe, I burned a path through, allowing Claude to quickly escape. The creature snarled and hissed and charged toward me. Erocotx was gone, but his fellow creatures which followed his footsteps remained.

Blood soaked into my clothes. I blocked and attacked. My energy was fluctuating. My mind was at an unease. Pain and numbness intertwined within me. The head of one of the creatures lay aside. I couldn’t recall when I had done that. But I did. I wasn’t sure if I was winning or if I was losing. One darted forward, mouth open, and sliced into my flesh. Ripping and clawing at me. Pain flared within me. I was losing track of the time. These creatures were far beyond anything I had ever faced. I grunted as I fell on my knees to the ground. Two stood, charging forward. At the corner of my lips, I could taste the rich metallic tang of my blood. I couldn’t die like this. No. This was too pathetic. I pushed myself up. Stood with my scythe in defense. I sliced and sliced until I fell. I fell. And I felt absolutely nothing.
