Chapter 31 (Part 1)
Ana.
I paced around the table. What was wrong with me? Why was I feeling like this? It was as if
someone had been squeezing my heart under its every beat by the second. This feeling didn’t feel
like it was mine, it was too entirely overwhelming. I bite the raw skin at the corner of my finger
off. A dot of red blood surfaced as the tangy sliced pain followed.
The sorceress’s gaze was glued onto me in amusement as she sat upon the sofa. Byron stood
before her, his hand was pressed firmly at the hilt of his weapon in case something or she
attacked.
“I think I hear something!” Tomai’s voice perked where he sat on the rug, near Lou’s feet. His
head shot in the direction of the doorway, as did mine.
Claude slammed the door inward, slashing at the tense air within the room. Blood painted across
his clothing as his eyes found mine. A small deep wound slit at his jawline, leaving more red
visible. I looked behind him, surprising myself by hoping I’d see the intolerable God. And yet, I
didn’t. Something rattled deep within my soul.
“Are you alright?” Claude asked autocratically. There was no smile. No smirk. No amusement.
Something was wrong. I hadn’t realized how close he strode towards me. “Ana,” he firmed,
trying to draw me to attention.
I frowned, eyebrows furrowed, quickly glimpsing behind to no one else’s presence. Tomai asked
the choking question at the bottom of my throat. “Where’s master Yuri?”
“He sent me,” he answered slightly turning and back towards me. There was something about
him that was irked. He didn’t want to be here. He was forced to.
“Why?” My voice broke softly into the empty air between us.
“You know why.” But I didn’t. At least I wasn’t certain. Byron could have protected us. I could
at least defend myself. Unless Yuri felt like we were in greater danger than we could handle. But
why wasn’t he here himself? Was he hurt? Is he alright?
“Was anyone or anything here?”
I shook my head. Claude swore under his breath and snapped his head at the clock above.
“Snake,” he called out to her, “Do something to make the time arrive at sunset faster.”
She chuckled and exhaled, “I cannot intervene with the workings within the mortal world,
Demon. It is treason and I rather not face the wrath of the Gods for your stupid little request.”
“Your being here is treason.” He growled menacingly.
Her tone was equally as sharp as a sword, “I will not be threatened to oblige your request.”
Claude took a step forward, but I held him back. “Tell me what happened.”
He didn’t. Instead, he pushed past me and dragged a chair out from the kitchen. Its two feet
screeching against the floorboard as he dropped it and firmed himself angrily upon it. The
sorceress held my gaze, intrigued. Standing, she narrowed her gaze intently and neared me whilst
Bryon and Claude’s eyes followed her menacingly. At closer glance, my eyes widened. Every
strand of her black hair were small thin snakes. Her eyes were slit and piercing as she studied
me.
“I must not say a word,” she began softly so that the others would not hear, “But I cannot help
myself. Your magic is pulling, control it before it calls those unwanted.”
My magic?
Why did… In that dream I had, Yuri said I had magic. And now her. But I don’t. And I knew
that whatever magic I had certainly didn’t derive from me. It was from that book. She must have
been mistaken. Still, it didn’t explain the dream. But it was just a dream. Wasn’t it? I tightened
the palm of my hand and felt the bandage around it. Yet this scar was as real as the pain that
accompanied.
The sudden glow of the amulet around her neck flickered and she clasped her hand around it. “I
must leave,” she muttered loud enough for Claude to hear. “My children need me. They are in
hiding. I must tend to them.”
Byron stood firmly before her, but Claude shook his head and waved his hand, “It’s better if she
leaves. Spares us the trouble.”
The sorceress shot him a nasty look and opened an inky looking portal within the wall. Before
she left, she tilted her head towards me, “We shall meet again dearest human, perhaps under
better circumstances.” She gave a little laugh and before I could register her words of knowing
she disappeared within the wall. A thick nothingness remained as Tomai walked to my side and
pressed his hand into mine. He was tired and a low grumble echoed from his stomach.
“Get him something to eat, Lou?” I asked kindly. The old woman silently nodded and took his
hand from mine. It was bizarre how alive she looked knowing what I know now.
The minutes felt like an eternity. Claude’s eyes were plastered upon the clock on the wall. A
deep frown was painted thickly upon his face. Asking him anything was useless and the last
thing I wanted right now was to argue with an angry demon.
My mind was burning, and my heart was rattling within my ribs. A deep, low, and scarring
feeling was tumbling low and nauseously at the pit of my stomach. My breaths were dragged and
heavy as I paced mindlessly around. I stopped in my tracks when I saw the woman who now
stood at the frame of the entrance.
“Ana,” she said my name and it fell out like honey and a soft kiss. The Goddess of Love stood at
the door with a soft but slightly broken smile upon her lips. I’d half expected Quilt to also join
behind her, but she stood alone. “May I come in?”
Claude scoffed from behind, “When does a Goddess require manners?”
Her smile brightened upon seeing him, “Claude of Iriil.”
Bryon ushered the Goddess in with a small bow as Claude continued, “I’m surprised you know
of me.”
“You leave a trail of broken hearts wherever you go. Both metaphorically and physically. It’s
hard to not know the one I’m constantly cleaning up after.”
He rolled his eyes and returned them to the clock as her smile faded apologetically, “Forgive me
if I’ve offended you. I come with no malice.”
“Don’t worry about him,” I interjected before he could say something that would scare the
Goddess off, “He’s not having a great day.”
“And you?” she asked suddenly. Her nearness was warm and comforting as she allowed me to
place my hands in hers.
“I…” I trailed.
“You’re worried,” she answered, “About the God of War.”
