Chapter 31 (Part 2)
Ana.
I blinked, stiffening at the way in which she phrased it. I shouldn’t be worried about him. I shouldn’t. And yet, I was. Claude’s gaze had already been fixed upon me as she spoke. His expression wasn’t one that brought me comfort, nor was it teasing in any way. He shifted and paced back and forth. When he sat, he avoided eye contact with me, yet his gaze was everywhere else- especially on the clock. He tapped the wooden table with his fingers impatiently. His unease had me quietly cold-sweating.
“Come,” the Goddess ushered me with a smile aside to follow her, “Let us speak.”
It was hard to resist her request and a part of me wondered if it was her compulsion. With brief hesitation, I obliged and followed her.
“Have you been here before?” I blurted in question, noticing how familiar she was with the surroundings and where she was going. She paused with her hand on the door which led out to the large open balcony and gave a little blush.
Loraine shook her head, “I can’t say I have. Yuriel isn’t one to entertain many guests or keep many friends.”
Yuriel. It was the first time I heard his full name like that. Now that I think about it, he’d never actually introduce himself to me formally. His real name could have been George all this time for all I knew.
“I think the fresh air might do you some good,” she smiled as she pushed open the door and breathed in the air deeply. Her eyes melted onto mine and her sugared smile accompanied. Were all the other Gods as pleasant as she was? Or could it be that she was the Goddess of Love that her duty meant she must always be a heart full of love and kindness? Her candy-white dress fluttered thoroughly with the song of the wind around her.
“You must have many questions,” she began as she studied me, “I should start by apologizing to you. You knew I was the Goddess and I hadn’t told you clearly. Forgive me.” Her eyes glossed as she said it and lowered her head a little, “And Quilt, you must understand he is duty bound to the master that he serves, but he cares for you deeply and that is why it pains him to have turned you away like that.”
Did Quilt truly feel that bad? A pinch of guilt trickled through my veins as I too haven’t been the most honest. I snuck into his shop and sent a message to Mathias. That which I still had no reply to. Hopefully, Quilt didn’t find it and tossed it away. But truthfully, I wasn’t that mad at him. Or mad at all really. If he feels as terrible as she was describing, then I had to stop by his shop sometime soon. Right now, however, all I was trying to accomplish was to steady my racing heart from the anxiety that was swelling within it.
I had so many questions. This Goddess before me must have at least some. And yet, I couldn’t bring myself to ask. I couldn’t bring myself to stop feeling the overwhelming sensation that was rattling within me. Why? Why was I feeling like this?
Worry plagued her features as she studied me, “Ana?” Her voice escaped in a soft gentle whisper to calm me.
The saliva thickened in my throat as my heart clenched. I drew my hand over the rapid beating of my heart. My feet wobbled backward. Something was wrong. I knew it. I felt it. I felt him.
“I have to go,” I turned, breathlessly.
“Ana? Are you okay?” she called out to me as she followed behind. I ran so quickly down the flight of stairs I stumbled over two steps at once. Grabbing my bag from the countertop in the kitchen, I rushed over to the drawers and threw in a few knives, a meat chopper, a rolling pin, and the dagger he had given me. Loraine was saying something behind me, but my mind was too much of a mess right now to understand her words. It throbbed and throbbed, and the pain was flaring through me as if I had been stabbed in the heart. But this wasn’t my pain. It was a numbing sensation. One I’d never felt. I didn’t understand anything right now other than the intense need I had to get to him.
The floor thumped under my shoes as I ran out of the kitchen when a hand grabbed me back. “What the bloody hells are you doing?” Claude’s sharp words cut through me, but I pulled away.
“We need to get to him.”
He looked at the time flustered and back at me, shaking his head. “No, not yet.”
“Then stay.” I barked and shot myself like a dagger out the door. The soles of my feet burned as I ran towards the well.
“Ana, wait!”
I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. With a fire swelling within me, I reached for the rope on the ground when I felt a sudden force flip me over. Claude walked towards me from afar, controlling the sudden force within the air as the Goddess stood at the doorway of the house with eyes widened.
“Are you trying to fucking kill yourself?” He towered over me as I shot up, wiping the dirt off my clothes.
“I have to go-”
“Little dove,” he growled clutching onto my wrists, “Don’t make this hard.”
“I’m not weak like he thinks I am! I can protect myself.”
“He doesn’t think that about you,” Claude frowned.
The sky loomed with dark clouds above as soft drops of rain fell upon us. The earth was still and silent. And a deadly chill rushed over us. Claude dropped my wrists and my heart also dropped when I turned to the right.
“Yuri,” I breathed. From the lake, he stumbled and dragged himself across. Blood was smeared onto his clothing, soaked, and sinful. His silver hair fell and licked onto his wet, sticky skin as he attempted to walk on both feet.
“Gods.” He was about to fall. Pain flushed through him. The air thinned around me and thickened all at once when I ran towards him, catching him just before he fell. He was heavier than I thought and he knelt before me as I did too, holding onto his upper body. He was bruised and bled at every naked part of his skin. His eyes remained closed as he wrapped an arm around my waist with relief in his breath, “You’re alright.”
My fingers tangled into his sweat-soaked hair as I held him with me and felt the slow beats of his heart thinning. No. He couldn’t be… He couldn’t be dying.
