Ana.
The air tightened and stiffened around me. I was being choked by nature itself. Punishment for what I did. I was a monster. A chilly shock of air grazed across my skin as I sat on the damp grass near the thorny rose patches. I tried to look up at the stars above but none were in sight tonight. Perhaps they were ashamed of being in my presence. The Gods would disown me as their devotee after what they saw. Mathias would be so displeased. This wasn’t what he stood for. I disappointed him. Burying my face into my knees, I ignored the soft rustling nearby. His scent danced into the air, followed by his low and icy voice. This time, however, it held a bit of uncertainty within it. A sense of softness.
“Why are you doing this to yourself?”
“Doing what?” I asked, keeping my teary eyes away from the God.
“Refusing to eat, to speak, to sleep.” He heaved in a low drawling tone, “That woman was vile. She doesn’t deserve your grief.”
“That woman was still my aunt!” I shot up at him, feeling myself sway a bit. His cold violet eyes bore into me, daring me to speak good words of her but to be quite truthful, there weren’t many. “That woman,” I continued a little gentler, “Was still a person. And I- I took her life.” My words crumbled finishing that sentence.
“A demon possessed her, Ana. You cannot blame yourself entirely.”
“I still did what I did,” I sighed and sat on the brick bench behind me as his cool gaze slid to mine. “I panicked and I… I can’t. I’m a- ”
“-No.” Yuri knelt before me. The palm of his hand on my leg was warm and eased the jitters within my soul. All through the material of my dress, he had such a profound effect on me. “Tell me, how can I make this better for you?”
I blinked. Was he trying to be kind to me? His demeanor was different from his usual self. He seemed so very vulnerable and tense right now. I had this violent urge to be close to him. To throw my arms around him and bury my face in his chest right now. But that- that was very wrong. And I’d committed one too many wrongs already. I didn’t know. I didn’t know how to make this better. How to make this nauseating, dark, sick, suffocating feeling go away?
“I don’t know,” I whispered as my heart ached. Perhaps I deserved this pain swelling within me. I was a murderer after all.
“Do you trust me?” he asked, taking hold of my hand, and pulling me gently to him as he stood.
I shouldn’t. But I do. I do trust him, at least right now I do. I followed him as he walked towards the lake. At the side, he dragged forward a small boat. “Here,” he said, reaching for my hand to help me in, “I think you might enjoy this.”
I observed the dark lake beneath us as we silently sailed. He hadn’t said a word and I hadn’t spoken since. I could have told he wanted me to, but my guilt was eating me alive. When Isabelle wakes up, what would she think of me? She only had her mother. How will she survive? She’d be forced to marry her fiancé quickly now and I know that would cause her to hate me even more. Had she seen me stab her mother? Gods, I’d hope not. My stomach tumbled. My chest was now a cage for a violet creature beating its walls inside. I clenched onto the edge of the boat with my fingers, painting my knuckles white in a flustered sort of sick agony.
“When I was banished, I hadn’t descended to earth right away,” Yuri began, capturing my attention. He dipped his finger into the lake and something odd happened. What was once a brief lake, soon turned into an endless sea, dark and gentle. So gentle, it glistened in reflection to the endless amount of stars overhead. It didn’t feel like we were back home anymore. We weren’t. The stars above sparkled down at me, and a few began falling. The moon hung low above and shimmered onto the dazzling sea. This was… magical. And unlike anything I’d seen before.
I turned to already see him staring at me. “Where’d you go?” I asked, hoping he’d continue his sentence.
He blinked, recollecting his thoughts, “After my violent rampage upon the hells for years, I became exhausted. I wanted to be alone. Earth was the other choice I had. I wasn’t too keen on finding an abode in a hell. So, I came down to earth and stumbled upon a place. A manor owned by a middle-aged couple who enjoyed throwing far too many balls and drinking an excessive amount of liquor. The couple was very fond of me, but eventually they died from old age. Humans die so quickly,” he muttered the last part and glossed his eyes over me for a few seconds, “They bore no children so the manor was not inherited by anyone. It was beautiful, I didn’t want it to crumble like the rest of manors I saw so I decided to use my magic to preserve it and its memories. And especially to hide it from any other passing humans. Besides, I needed somewhere to live.”
“I thought you hated us humans.”
“Yes, I suppose. They were kind to me, but they were flawed. Weak. Untrusting to each other. Well, I thought they were all like that, until…” His eyes bore into mine, speaking a million words all at once. His gaze shortly shifted behind me, and a soft smile glazed upon his face, “Welcome to Stillwaters Creek Manor, my sweet human.”
