Yuri.

“Are you satisfied?” I asked my brother, swallowing away the distraught I just ached through.

“Yuri, how are you able to conjure that magic?” he questioned, avoiding my question and keeping his gaze now on the empty spot where the portal had just been.

A rush of anger jolted through me. Hellfire seeped out of my hands as my eyes dilated, “Are you truly asking that question and not paying any mind to what just happened?”

“I will pacify her.”

“You will do no such thing,” I seethed.

Mathias frowned, straightening his composure, “You’re being unreasonable.”

“Unreasonable is the manner in which you handle things, brother. I gave you time to tell her the truth and you still hadn’t. You left it to me, and it was hard enough hearing of it myself from you.”

“And I owe you an apology. I am truly sorry-”

“For what? You know Mathias, you wouldn’t last a day in my shoes if what had been done to me done to you.”

“What exactly is this about?”

“Everything!” I hissed. The lump in my throat now twisting in agony, “Had you any idea what I had been through? Banished to this earth, turned into a demon. And for what? I made a decision to protect our people. And I was punished for it. No one asked me why I made that decision to bring that violence upon Sinder. The Sinderian army was smuggling innocents throughout the Hells, the next victims would have been our people. There was a camp of women and their spawns chained and tortured. You know better than I if I had gone to the High Court nothing would have been done. Not in time, at least. So, I took it into my own hands. And yet I was in the wrong.”

“Yuriel, I had no idea.”

“Well of course you wouldn’t.” I sneered, “Where had you been anyway? You never came to me, never cared to see me even once, to ask me what happened. You treated me like the monster you pushed them to turn me into.”

“You know I had no idea they would have done that to you,” he defended. “And monster or not, you are my brother.”

“Your action says so little to your words spoken. The truth is you resented me, you thought I was a monster so then that’s what I became. I gave you a better reason to stay away.”

“I don’t know what else I can do to earn your forgiveness. I thought keeping your power safe, and giving her back life was the right thing to do, but it does have its consequences. And I am deeply regretful. What the High Court turned you into does not define what you are. This monstrous story of you will change, I promise you that. You will return to the Highland.”

“Don’t make empty promises to me, Mathias. It’s too late for all that now. The damage has already been done. I rather you look at me with disgust than pity.”

“Yuri-”

“No.” I scoffed, “Perhaps I’m better off being the villain in this story.

Mathias stood solemnly. He was deeply distraught by the truth. I could sense how weak he felt inside, how empty he was now feeling. A similar feeling to what the human was experiencing. A violent hopelessness. I wanted to hear nothing more from him. He needed to leave soon. He’s done enough and quite honestly I don’t know what I was capable of doing if he stayed and said something more to frustrate me.

I exhaled briefly and turned away from him. The leaves crunched under my boots as I began walking away from him. I stopped as a concluding thought entered my mind and tilted my head to him.

“And the girl,” I said, with a warning as cold as death, “Stay away from her, she belongs to me now.”

I couldn’t bring myself to go up to the room she was in. For the first time in my life, I was a coward. How was I supposed to comfort the human in a situation like this? If anything, I would be the last person she’d want to see right now. I couldn’t erase the way the tears stained her face out of my head. It was a vicious kind of tormenting memory. Tomai seemed to be her comfort back at the previous house, but he wasn’t here right now. I shifted uneasily on the armchair near the fireplace. The soft crackling of the fire always calmed me in tense moments. A distant memory crept into my mind in that quiet moment as I stared into the flames before me. One that didn’t even feel like mine anymore.

A memory of two boys running through the chilly woods. One with golden hair like the earth’s sun and another with hair the colour of the midnight’s moon. Their laughter tousled through the leaves and branches. They shouldn’t have been out at the Sunning Hour. An hour that froze just before sunfall. An hour where creatures lurked in the hollow woods. But they wanted to explore, despite their parents’ wishes. Children rarely ever listen anyway. They itched to find the jewels that were stuck into the walls of Cave Lerout. They’d been running, exploring, and playing until they stumbled upon a dark cave that called out to them. A sinister voice tempted them inside. The boy with the sun-coloured hair stood before the cave with a deep frown. He turned to the other and tried to convince them to turn back. Something didn’t feel right about this place. A scream then filled the air. The scream of their mother calling for their help. The silver-haired boy bolted in, not processing the entirety of the situation. Only wanting to save his mama.

Violent cries echoed as a creature on all four emerged and attacked. It ripped his skin apart and sank its jagged teeth deep into his flesh, wanting both flesh and bone to devour. A flashing yellow light, through the hands of the first boy, shot at the creature. It shrieked and recoiled as the boy finished it off, turning it to nothing but ash. He dragged his wounded brother out, attempting to tear his clothing to tie around his brother’s wounds. They had roughly thirty minutes left before the Sunning Hour ended- if it ended- because sometimes time doesn’t work as it usually would. They knew they couldn’t get out of the woods before the hour was finished. And so, they had no choice but to wait. Finding the smallest, most secluded place nearby, he hid himself and his sobbing little brother.

‘Am I going to die?’ The injured boy asked softly.

‘Not as long as I’m alive,’ the other answered.

He placed his hand over the silver-haired boy’s heart and began taking the pain away, into himself. They both endured the ending of the Sunning Hour, and the sun-haired boy regardless of how much pain he was in, carried his wounded brother back to their home, to their parents. The silver-haired boy had wanted to tell his parents of the sacrifice his brother had made but his brother made him promise not to. And so, one brother was left with the scar, and the other suffered the pain.

I rolled up my sleeves to see the faint scar that remained on my arm from that day. “Mathias, you fool.” I found myself murmuring. The strings of my heart twisted and cramped at the thought of him. My vision blurred before me, deep in that memory. I bit my lip, trying to keep it in. Trying to hate him. I couldn’t. Instead, I choked on the thought, of that memory- one of many. That lump in my throat ached as a single tear fell upon the handle of the chair I was leaning over. Now, it was all too late.

A familiar scent trickled through my nostrils. One I detested. The creature’s scent shuffled throughout the house and into the room the girl was in. With a deep scowl, I followed. He sat in the chair before her, watching as she slept. Her face was stained from the tears, and her cheeks a blotching red. The pillow was soaked in salty sobs. Every ache, I felt.

“If I’d known any better, I’d think you genuinely like the human, my Lord.” Sin said in amusement, keeping his gaze fixed on her.

“You did not need to be here.”

“I’ve come to tell you that the Black-Blooded Moon shall reach its peak shortly.”

“I haven’t forgotten our bargain.”

“Good,” his sinister smile widened to sadistic delight as he stood. He glimpsed into the nearby room and beckoned me to follow.

Stepping into the room, he postured himself before two giant creatures and turned to me. The armored, rock-like creatures looked down at me, observing me with stone-cold eyes. Each held red magic cuffs that were used to prison deadly Gods and monsters.

“I gave you my word that I would go, there was no need for this.” I scowled.

Syn shrugged. “I am only taking the necessary precautions if you resist.”

Scoffing, the giants neared me. One let out a low rumble as I held out my wrist. The weighted chains that hang off the cuffs dragged to the floor, heavy and humiliating.

“You said the girl will not be harmed.” I reiterated to him.

“Not even a strand of her hair will be touched,” he smiled.

I walked back into her room quietly, where my captures followed, ensuring my confinement. She slept peacefully as I stooped before her. My fingers grazed over the side of her cheeks, brushing away the strands of loose hair that fell over her eyes. “Forgive me,” I whispered before standing again and shutting the door behind me.  “Good,” I responded to his previous statement.

Syn let out a breathy sigh and clapped his hand together to the creature’s attention, “Take him away.”

A low growl escaped my throat. Oh, how I wanted to kill him at this very moment.

He chuckled wickedly, as he carved a door through the floorboard. “You’ll thank me later, demon-God.”

The roof was wetter than she was tonight. Heavy raindrops pounded on, turning into a storm of desire and frustration. He was gone longer than she’d expected. Not a single call. The past few days with these unwanted guests in her house made her uneasy to say the least. Yet, wanted by her husband. Who the hell told him he could make a decision like that without her? God, he frustrated the shit out of her. God, did she love him anyway.

Elizabeth twirled her wedding ring around her delicate finger and shifted restlessly on the empty bed. The feeling of loneliness crept up between her legs. She shifted again. The nerve that man had to leave her here like this for days. She was thirsty. Really thirsty. The bottles at the bedside table had all been drained from earlier today. She hated cramps with a passion. She hated when he wasn’t around her when she felt like this.

Deciding to refill the water mug, she pushed herself off the bed and threw over a white shirt of her husband’s. This was the closest she felt to him in days, somehow it warmed her heart. Brushing her fingertips over the assortment of his cologne, she opted for her favourite. Musky. Dark. Sensual. Charming. Everything she’d describe Sebastian Lockwick to be.

The lights of the hall had been buried in darkness, yet the moonlight fought through the windows which luminated the moon-crest sloped staircase. The warm soles of her feet licked the icy marble beneath her as she made her way into the kitchen. Her eyes burned from the lack of sleep and worry. Men.

The sound of the ice maker suddenly startled her, causing her to spill the water she was pouring into a glass. “Shit.” As she pressed the rim of the glass to her lips, the sound of a hushed door closing grasped her attention. 11:55pm. Who could have been down here so late? Was someone breaking in? Surely, she could have handled the situation herself. Grabbing a hold on the nearest knife at the counter, she carefully trailed towards the sound.

A blanket of silence fell upon her at the sight of her husband drenched in blood, white shirt now wine, the tang of metallic red sin caressed her nose, his hair soaked in thick salted sweat and blood that slicked to his forehead. His eyes, however, reflected from the moonlight in its majestic silver blue. Elizabeth frowned deeply as he stalked towards her and stood inches apart.

“Well, you’re bloody late.” She broke the silence, annoyed.

Sebastian gave out a low chuckle, astonished at his wife’s dry humor, “A pun? Really?”

“How dare you leave me here like this,” she softly raged, bringing the knife up to his throat, “How fking dare you.”

“Love,” he cooed into her left ear, and pulled her tenderly by the waist, clasping the spaces between them. “I missed you too.”

“Are you forgetting the knife in my hand, Sebastian?” She warned.

“Go ahead, stab me.”

Sighing, she dropped it and wrapped her arms around his red moist neck. Swiftly, scooping her into his arms and perching her upon the kitchen’s island. “I should get cleaned up,” he suggested, “I don’t want you getting ill.”

“No, no. I’m not waiting anymore,” Elizabeth breathed shortly, locked her legs around him. Pressing her lips onto his, she’d slip her tongue in through smiles. He tasted like blood and vodka. Whose blood was this? She hadn’t even known. His hands travelled along her naked legs, as she moaned into him. Up. Up. Pulling away slightly, she kept an arm’s length, breathed, and slapped him across the face.

“You’re upset. I shouldn’t have left like that. I know. Things got… complicated.” He motioned to his drenched attire.
