Ana.

Gasping for air, I opened my eyes back to the lake. Claude jumped out and dragged the boat onto the grass. I wobbled as I stood but he steadied me up and lifted me out of the water.

“Ana!” a familiar voice called toward me. Loraine, the Goddess of Love, rushed towards me with a thick blanket. Red streaks painted the sky, and a bloody sort of sunrise was threatening around us.

“Ana,” she repeated my name as she gently pulled me towards her and wrapped the blanket around me. Everything around me was happening and yet I did not feel present. The emptiness inside me ached. My heart froze as I noticed the house before me damaged and windows shattered in.

“W-what happened?”

Loraine paused. Her face turned to a frightened sort of stone as if she had just seen a ghost.

“Tell me what happened,” I persisted. “Where’s Yuri?”

“Ana, please,” Loraine pleaded, “Let’s just get you inside and cleaned up.”

“There’s no point in hiding it from her,” Claude frowned. “It’s better if she knows.”

Loraine was hesitant but guided me inside as Claude followed and sat me on the sofa. A strange silence drifted through the air. Where was Tomai and everyone else? Heavy footsteps neared from the porch. The sun-haired God stood with a weightless gaze and gentle sigh at the frame of the door- or what was left of it at least.

“Mathias,” Loraine breathed in relief as she saw him.

I scanned the room, but Tomai’s soft and cheerful laughter was gone. “Where is everyone?”

“Ana,” Mathias stooped before me as Claude observed with a deep scowl behind, “Tell me how you feel first. Are you hurt?”

I pushed his hand away, “No! Tell me where everyone is right now! Tell me where Yuri is. Where are Tomai and Byron and Lou? Why is the house looking like this? Gods. Gods, what happened here…”

“We don’t know,” Claude interjected, “Yuri was captured. Taken.”

“And we have no idea at this time who or what took him,” Mathias sighed, “Or where.”

“I- I don’t understand…” I frowned, perplexed.

“Whatever took him-” Loraine helped, “It came for Byron and Tomai as well. Lou had a concussion but she is resting.” Her grief-stricken eyes deepened as she spoke and looked up at Mathias for comfort.

He squeezed the top of her shoulders as he continued, “We will find them, Ana. We will.”

I stood, choking on the words I just heard. This couldn’t be possible. Were they taken? Where? And by whom? No. I couldn’t believe this. There must have been a mistake.

“I wish it was all untrue,” Loraine sighed, “But I saw him there while I was walking to the house… chained to those rock-like creatures standing afar. I didn’t understand why he didn’t fight them off. Another went into the house and abducted the boy. I tried to move but magic was holding me still. Everything all became a blur to me after. I don’t remember. Only waking up to find the house in a mess and Lou in a horrid state.”

“I saw none of that,” Claude inputted, “But I don’t believe the Goddess would lie. I only returned to find the damage already done.”

“What are you thinking?” Loraine asked softly as she studied Mathias’s face. He was standing deep in thought and worry.

His lips remained in a thin line and his eyebrow furrowed to his thoughts, “I have to take this to the High Court, a God abducted is a serious offense.”

Claude scoffed, “The very ones who turned him into a demon? Do you truly believe they care? For all we know, they could have been the ones who took him in the first place, just like they wanted to take his magic.”

“I know that,” Mathias scowled, “They would not be willing but I will try to persuade them. If not, I will find another way or find him myself.”

“Mathias,” the Goddess protested. She stood, facing him with glossy eyes, but Mathias was too lost in his worry to take heed of her apprehension.

For the rest of the evening, Mathias and Claude had been out and back in the attempt to find out where the God was taken. Loraine had been making small talk to comfort me but my mind was too fixed in figuring out where Yuri was. I used the book Murvista gave me to ask where he had been taken to but the pages just kept turning blank. Instead, I found myself in the library trying my best to research what was the rock-like creature Loraine explained she saw. Perhaps, if I found that I could have figured out where it took him.

Time was eating us alive and constantly hitting us at a dead end. A deep, longing ached within me. An emptiness settled in the pit of my stomach. The days were soon mocking our failed efforts. It had been a week since they were taken and not one lead.

I sat at the center of all the scattered books in the library, both open and closed. A stack tumbled down at the side of me as someone entered the room. Heavy footsteps hit the wooden floor and I didn’t need to look up to know who it was. Mathias possessed a clean and crisp sort of scent. Notes of citrus, mint, and sea salt- one much like the ocean’s breeze- evoking feelings of tranquility and invigoration which drew one in, and left them with a sense of freshness and purity long after he was gone was one way to describe the magic that this God held alone.

“You have not been resting,” he stated softly.

“I can’t sleep,” I answered honestly, reflecting the same gentle tone. Over the past few days, I found it hard to stay mad at Mathias. Although I did not exactly forgive the situation yet, I held no malice against the God before me. He had been trying. Both to find Yuri and gain my love and forgiveness back. And I couldn’t, for the life of me, hold a grudge when I saw how much effort he had been putting in. From sunrise to sunset, he had been out and back in search of his brother. His eyes were telling of the worry within. And for many moments I often forgot this was a God. But simply a being with feelings that ached too within him.

“May I?” He asked, hoping to sit in the empty space near me.

I nodded. Mathias plucked a book from the floor beside us and cracked the spine open as he spoke, “What I did to you and Yuri was not my place. It was wrong and I understand that. He asked me to speak to you, to tell you the truth but I couldn’t. I couldn’t because I was afraid of this. I couldn’t bear to see you look at me like this. With such disappointment.”

“I’m just a human girl, Mathias. I’m not any God or-”

“Is that what you think?” he planted his gaze upon me. I could feel his sky-blue eyes grazing upon the side of my cheek, “You are much more than just a human girl to me, Ana Alois. You are the essence of my being and the very magic of my soul. And though I may be the God of Faith, you are the epitome of faith itself. I am nothing without you. When I held the stone of time, it was clear to me that you must be saved, given a second chance. And if I had failed you once, Ana, I did not want to do so again. I just-” he paused, sucking in a heavy breath as I turned to him. “I could think of no other way at the time. I panicked… I know that isn’t a very Godly thing of me to say. Perhaps I am no God.”

“Mathias,” I spoke softly and placed a hand over his. Something I had never thought I would ever be blessed enough to do, “I am not happy with this situation and I admit I feel incredibly hurt. But I do not think you cruel. I will never brush aside the strength you had given me for my entire life, the comfort I felt when I whispered your name, and the joy I felt when I focused on the little things I had in life. You were always here for me when I felt alone. I will never forget that.”

“I understand now why his magic chose you.”

I knitted my eyebrows, perplexed at his statement, “Chose me?”

“Yes,” he smiled, “Our magic is life itself, and when taken out of the one whom it dwells within, it will look for that being’s fated significant who is worthy of its power.”

“Oh,” was all I could say after processing that, “Does that mean if Yuri takes back his magic I will die?”

Mathias frowned at my sudden question. “Whatever happens I am at your side.”

“We have to find him, Mathias.” I stated, feeling the knot deep in my stomach tighten, “I feel as if I am wilting on the inside and it’s driving me mad.”

He wrapped his arms around me gently and buried my face into his chest, “We will.”

After Mathias left, I tiredly ran my fingers along the spines of the books remaining on the shelf. A thick dusty red book with a velvet cover stood out. Pulling it out, I flipped open the pages to look at the images of what I believed to be ancient creatures. I couldn’t exactly read the text as it was in another language but an image stood out to me. A rock-like figure, the colour of mud, and those empty soulless eyes stared back at me. Was this the creature Loraine saw? It had to be. Maybe if Claude saw it, he’d understand what the words meant.

I hurried through the hallway to find him out on the balcony under the gray sky, with a flask in his hand. He leaned over the wall and his dark hair dipped over his eyes, staring at his hands with a heavy gaze.

“What is it, little dove?” his voice drawled out in a quaint softness.

“I think I may have found something that may help.”

With a sharp turn, he strode over to me, towering above. “Show me.” His stiffened posture loosened and a glimmer of hope settled within his eyes. He took hold of the book and nodded, “It’s ancient Vulixure. A demonic language spoken by an extinct tribe. I can’t understand fully, it but I might know someone who can transcribe it for me.” A wash of hope painted over me, as he flipped through the pages.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet, we still have to know what’s written.”

“I mean for coming back for me. I would have died if you hadn’t shown up.”

My gratitude caught up to him and he gave me a brief perplexed look before returning his eyes to the book. It made me wonder if anyone had ever thanked him for anything in his life before because his reaction seemed so taken aback but in a subtle yet warm manner.

“I quite like you,” he admitted with a little smile, still not returning his gaze to me, “You find yourself in the most murderous situations which are amusing to me, and you make tasty human food. It would be a pity if you died.”

A storm threatened above us. Dark laughter crackled from the Highland as heavy droplets needled onto our skin.

“Go inside, I’ll speak to Mathias. This what you found could be something that would give us answers about Yuri’s location.”

“Ana,” Loraine pushed through the door, almost out of breath. She turned to Claude, the vibrancy of the blue in her eyes was fading as she spoke to him, “Something’s wrong.”

The roof was wetter than she was tonight. Heavy raindrops pounded on, turning into a storm of desire and frustration. He was gone longer than she’d expected. Not a single call. The past few days with these unwanted guests in her house made her uneasy to say the least. Yet, wanted by her husband. Who the hell told him he could make a decision like that without her? God, he frustrated the shit out of her. God, did she love him anyway.

Elizabeth twirled her wedding ring around her delicate finger and shifted restlessly on the empty bed. The feeling of loneliness crept up between her legs. She shifted again. The nerve that man had to leave her here like this for days. She was thirsty. Really thirsty. The bottles at the bedside table had all been drained from earlier today. She hated cramps with a passion. She hated when he wasn’t around her when she felt like this.

Deciding to refill the water mug, she pushed herself off the bed and threw over a white shirt of her husband’s. This was the closest she felt to him in days, somehow it warmed her heart. Brushing her fingertips over the assortment of his cologne, she opted for her favourite. Musky. Dark. Sensual. Charming. Everything she’d describe Sebastian Lockwick to be.

The lights of the hall had been buried in darkness, yet the moonlight fought through the windows which luminated the moon-crest sloped staircase. The warm soles of her feet licked the icy marble beneath her as she made her way into the kitchen. Her eyes burned from the lack of sleep and worry. Men.

The sound of the ice maker suddenly startled her, causing her to spill the water she was pouring into a glass. “Shit.” As she pressed the rim of the glass to her lips, the sound of a hushed door closing grasped her attention. 11:55pm. Who could have been down here so late? Was someone breaking in? Surely, she could have handled the situation herself. Grabbing a hold on the nearest knife at the counter, she carefully trailed towards the sound.

A blanket of silence fell upon her at the sight of her husband drenched in blood, white shirt now wine, the tang of metallic red sin caressed her nose, his hair soaked in thick salted sweat and blood that slicked to his forehead. His eyes, however, reflected from the moonlight in its majestic silver blue. Elizabeth frowned deeply as he stalked towards her and stood inches apart.

“Well, you’re bloody late.” She broke the silence, annoyed.

Sebastian gave out a low chuckle, astonished at his wife’s dry humor, “A pun? Really?”

“How dare you leave me here like this,” she softly raged, bringing the knife up to his throat, “How fking dare you.”

“Love,” he cooed into her left ear, and pulled her tenderly by the waist, clasping the spaces between them. “I missed you too.”

“Are you forgetting the knife in my hand, Sebastian?” She warned.

“Go ahead, stab me.”

Sighing, she dropped it and wrapped her arms around his red moist neck. Swiftly, scooping her into his arms and perching her upon the kitchen’s island. “I should get cleaned up,” he suggested, “I don’t want you getting ill.”

“No, no. I’m not waiting anymore,” Elizabeth breathed shortly, locked her legs around him. Pressing her lips onto his, she’d slip her tongue in through smiles. He tasted like blood and vodka. Whose blood was this? She hadn’t even known. His hands travelled along her naked legs, as she moaned into him. Up. Up. Pulling away slightly, she kept an arm’s length, breathed, and slapped him across the face.

“You’re upset. I shouldn’t have left like that. I know. Things got… complicated.” He motioned to his drenched attire.
