Fatal Alliances: Chapter 4
My head ached. My eyes felt so heavy they hurt. The light from the ceiling made it even more torturing for me to fully open my eyelids. Wait, I don’t know this place. Where was I? I tried my best to get up from where I was on this oddly comfortable bed. It was like I had someone shoot arrows through my stomach. That man had kicked me and…..he threw me off the bridge. But… I’m alive? I don’t remember anything.
Forcefully, I got myself off the bed and looked around the room. It was large and unbelievably neat. Everything was in perfect order, from the books to the pencils on the bedhead. Walking towards the full-size mirror, I saw how scattered I looked. My hair was everywhere and my clothes… Oh my God.
I wasn’t in the regular clothing I had on earlier. Instead, I was wearing this white shirt- a man’s shirt. Thankfully, it was quite long for me. W-where am I? Whose shirt is this? Panic swarmed through me as I ran my fingers through my long dark hair which was damp. Wait, what time was it? I rushed to open the curtain just at the other side of the room when I observed the most spectacular view. The New York night lights made a kaleidoscope of colours that sparkled like the first pour of opened wine. The curtain covered all the walls of the room when I realized that it wasn’t actually walls, but glass windows from floor to ceiling. Wow. I know for sure I wasn’t anywhere near home now. I think I was in a hotel, on the top floor.
As I left the room I found myself in yet another room, the cold marbled floor licked my soft sensitive feet.
An office? At the center of the large space sat a great, rich wooden desk and a massive, but quite comfortable-looking, leather chair. I noticed another room, the door was ajar and the movements of people were evident on the other side. Nearing it, I became a bit nervous as I heard voices on the other side. Slowly, I opened the door to step out, when suddenly gazes fell upon me. There were three men. I distinctly remembered one of the guys, he was the same one that I had bumped into at the hotel and was there in the situation with the masked men- they all were. The second guy I remembered was the one that winked at me, he had this kind of spoiled rich heir look to him. He was probably the type I would imagine that would hit on all the girls. And then there was the other, he had this toned serious look on his face, the way he folded his arms seemed like he was the one that never panicked. They all just kept staring at me until the first came up to me with a bright smile on his face,
“You’re awake. I was so worried. How are you feeling now?”
“Umm….I…I’m alright.” I said, weakly trying to smile back at him, but with everyone looking at me, it just felt so uncomfortable.
The stare I got from the second individual was disturbing. It was like he was mentally chewing me. I tugged the end of the shirt down, realizing I was in a room filled with men.
The first laughed at my reaction. “Don’t worry, we won’t even think of hurting you. You already went through so much.” He said, putting his hand on my head in a playful way, “I’m Finneas, but please just call me Finny. That’s Donnie and Ricardo.”
Ricardo’s stare was more intense than the one Donnie was giving me. His stare felt like he was reading who I was, where I came from, what I did, and also had a hint of ‘I’m going to step on you like a bug’ stare in there too.
“My, you look pale, kitten. Do you want something to drink?” Donnie asked.
“No, no, I’m fine,” I answered, even though I really did want some water.
“Thankfully we got to you in time, else you would have been fish food,” Finny stated.
“I actually thought I was going to die,” I whispered softly to myself, but Finny held my shoulders tightly and gave me the warmest smile he could to comfort me. “Thank you for helping me.” I continued with the most gratefulness I could muster up.
“What I want to know, Ms. Greene, is what exactly you saw inside that folder,” Ricardo questioned, speaking to me for the first time.
Wait, Ms. Greene? He knew my name?
“H-how do you know my name?” I asked with a tremble.
“Please just answer my question, Juliet.” He said as calm as a lion about to pounce on its prey.
“I- I saw strange things.” I answered honestly, “I thought they were my folders. I’m sorry but I have to go, thank you again for saving me.”
Something was raising my precaution levels about these guys. They knew my name and honestly, if they had anything to do with that whole drug business, then they weren’t the type of people I’d like to be around- no matter how nice they were to me. At that point, I didn’t care if I walked out on the street in a man’s shirt. Heck, I would walk out dressed as Godzilla to get away from where I was now.
As I headed for the door, Ricardo held me back, “You can’t leave yet.”
Donnie suddenly stepped in front of me, “Sorry about this, Kit Kat.”
“What? Why can’t I leave!” I shouted, letting my panic and fear out.
“Look, leave it up to us and we’d let you go free, but he doesn’t want to let you go just yet.” Donnie continued.
“He?”
“Yes, a friend of ours,” Ricardo replied calmly.
“How dare he? Who the hell does he think he is! He can’t decide whether he can keep me or not! I don’t belong to him!”
“Maybe you should just calm down. It’s not good for your health and I’m no doctor.” Donnie said.
“No! I have a few things I’d like to say to this friend of yours!”
“Then why don’t you tell me yourself?” I heard a velvety voice from behind me.
Turning around, I saw the young man from earlier, the one who bargained for me- for the folders, of course. As he came closer to me, I could almost feel a sort of coldness penetrate from him, it was intimidating. He even dared to take up my personal space being only inches away from me. His eyes cut through me sharply, there was something about his gaze that would make you drop dead….literally. His dark, messy hair contrasted from his deadly gaze though. It was more of a cute little kid’s shaggy-haired look when he got out of bed. But his face sold the ‘I’m going to kill you’ look. He genuinely looked like he was going to do something terrible to me. The way he clenched his teeth and tightened his jaw added to the defined features of his nonetheless beautiful face.
“Ungrateful.” He muttered softly for only me to hear.
I was actually unable to speak. For the first time in my life, I had no idea what to say. I was never in a situation like this. It almost seemed as if he towered over me as to how tall he was. His closeness to me was more than intimidating.
“If you’re only going to stare at me, then get out of my way.” He said with distaste dripping from his tone.
No way. No way in hell was I taking that from a man.
“Didn’t your mother ever teach you to speak to a lady politely?” I replied bitterly.
He almost seemed a bit taken back at my response for a few seconds, and I noticed from the corner of my eye the wide-eyed looks I got from Finny and Donnie. He pushed me aside and sat down on the sofa, glaring at me.
And I’m the one staring at him too long?
“Lady.” He chuckled, “Are you really?”
Well, what was I? A man? What a douche.
“How dare you.”
“Ah- ah- ah,” He said waving a finger, “You wouldn’t want me asking back for my shirt now, would you?”
He wouldn’t dare.
As he stood up and walked towards me, I actually felt like he would. I took a cautious step back from him, “Look if you’re-“
“Shut up.”
I was taken back at the sudden manner in which he spoke to me.
“Let’s get something straight, Ms. Greene, I don’t appreciate people talking back at me. And quite frankly, you’re crossing your limit with me and my patience with you. So from now on, as long as you’re with me, you’ll do as I say. Understood?”
“I …I…”
“Answer me with a yes or no.” He stated demandingly.
“Uh…Y-….O-okay.” I replied, feeling a bit uneasy.
He rolled his eyes in annoyance with me, “Idiot.” I heard him say before leaving the room.
Something told me that maybe they weren’t ordinary men. That man made me feel so different. Uneasy.
“Julie,” Finny’s voice called beside me, “Trust me, you being here is for your own good. Adrian can be a bit…complex in his way of thinking, but he wishes the best for you, really.”
“Complex?” I said with teary eyes towards them, “This is wrong, whatever this is. It’s kidnapping and illegal.”
“You have quite a mouthful, Greene.” Ricardo interrupted, “I wouldn’t advise you to practice too much of that around here though.”
“Look buttercup, if you want to go home so badly, why don’t you try being nicer to him tomorrow? He’s already mad about what happened today.” Donnie said.
I couldn’t stand them, this was just too much. For the first time in my life, I wanted to see Jenna, I wanted her to tell me that everything was going to be okay. She’s going to be so mad and worried for me. I should’ve reached home a long time ago, but reality hit me like a kick in the gut.
Am I ever going home?
