BLURB
After being stripped of his title as a God and turned into a demon in the presence of his brother, Yuri was banished to earth to live amongst the humans whom he hates. 200 years later, a young girl shows up at his doorstep holding both his life and death in her hands whilst not having any idea of the power in which she possesses.
Yuri.
I’d do anything to get my full power back.
And I would make them all pay.
The way the sun ached through my window and sat upon my lap was taunting. I knew the Gods were looking at me. They always were. Whether I was in the company of Claude and Roseil or here in this house, their eyes never left. Perhaps they should have been more interested in their own responsibilities than fixating on mine from the skies above. Letting out a low growl, I pulled the curtain shut.
My damp hair dripped on my shoulders as I stared at my reflection. It was a look that takes some getting used to. I admit the human did her best. Perhaps I shouldn’t have been so blunt to her. Her face sizzled in colour and the lump in her throat thickened when I confessed that I could have read her thoughts. They were so loud, yet so soft. I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t a little intrigued by them. Or how the gentleness of her silent thoughts reminded me of my brother’s. Could this be his doing? Her presence here was already his doing. But what influence does he have on her? And why?
I tossed the white shirt onto me and tucked it casually into my dark pants. Here, I felt like a beggar. Even the humans’ best and finest clothing was nothing compared to mine back at the palace. Home. A home I would never see again. A home that was stolen from me when I tried to do nothing but protect it. Fuck the Council of the Gods- the High Court. I’ll make sure they rot in the darkest of hells one day. Begging me for mercy.
A courteous scent danced around and in the kitchen. A sweet pungent fragrance of something closest to heaven lingered through the air. Her voice was distinct, soft, and cheerful as she spoke to Tomai.
“These are so delicious, Ana!” His smile split as wide as he opened his mouth to stuff what he called a chocolate cupcake in. Crumbles of the sweet brown food fell to the floor as I sighed. Annoyed. She was treating my dragon as if he was an actual child. Did she not see it turn into its true self before her? Was she not afraid? She pasted a soft, dark, stuffed liquid on the top of the cupcake and sprinkled what seemed to be colourful dots on the top.
“Give me another!” he said eagerly.
“Finish that one first, and chew properly.” She scolded as he nodded and ran out of the kitchen.
Her attention fell onto me and quickly diverted, turning her back to me. Her thoughts scattered. Almost panicked. Handing searching into the drawers and opening the pantries. If I had assumed right, she was purposefully trying to divert her thoughts and avoid looking at me. Her long dark hair tumbled down to her waist. As she moved, the sunlight through the window highlighted specs of earthy brown. She turned. Soft grey eyes locked onto mine. Regret filled her as she grabbed the dirtied silverware and spun, tossing them into the sink.
“Bryon and Lou are feeling much better by the way. Lou had somewhat of a fever last night but she’s alright now.” Her voice held a nervous tang to it and her back remained pressed in my view. She was purposefully trying not to look. “I hope you don’t mind but Tomai mentioned that he’d never had chocolate cupcakes, you had most of the ingredient here, so I thought maybe-”
“Have I done something wrong?” I ignored her earlier statement and asked. I didn’t care about what she fed my vehicle nor about Lou or Bryon right now. It irked me that she was avoiding my presence.
“Pardon?” She turned, confused. I walked closer and stood inches away from her to hear the quickening of her heartbeat. Yellow made her look quite radiant I had to admit. The yellow dress with tiny flowers she wore clasped onto her soft curves and flowed gracefully to her knees. I was surprised at the design which allowed her shoulders to remain bare yet sleeved subtly puffed at her arms. I never truly observed this human before, and why she was so special to my brother. Her scent mingled with mine, soft woody florals laced with hints of citrus and earthy tones. I couldn’t understand her thoughts right now, her heart was pounding too loudly as she pressed her back against the counter- nowhere to go. The way her chest gently rose and fell, something primal in me kicked in. She was so. very. feminine.
“Yuri,” she said softly, her voice tugging at my shirt as strands of her hair spilled onto her face. She parted her lips to speak. Hesitated. But continued, “I don’t like that you can read my thoughts.”
Her statement surprised me, yet somehow I couldn’t pull away. It was as if I was in an aching trance. “I hadn’t realized it would bother you so much,” I answered honestly.
“It does.”
“Then I won’t.” I lifted my hand, unable to fight the urge within me, to tuck the loose strand of hair behind her ear. Slowly, I let my thumb graze gently against her soft cheek as I did. Familiarity kicked in. I frowned. This was impossible. Why did she feel so familiar? “I won’t,” I repeated myself, trying to hide my frown.
“How delicious.” Claude’s voice daggered through the air, startling her slightly as he leaned at the doorway. I peeled away, disenchanted by his presence. He stood smugly with a hit of a smirk on his lips as he bit into one of the cupcakes. “You sure know how to make them melt into your mouth,” he grinned, taking another bite.
“Try not to choke on it,” she iced before walking away.
He chuckled and arched a brow at me when she was out of sight. “Didn’t think fancying humans to be quite your thing.”
“If that ever happens then I’ll personally allow you to stab your dagger into me.”
He scoffed, grabbed another one of those cupcakes, and perched himself atop the counter. “Please, you were looking like you were going to ravish the poor thing right then and there. Sin was practically oozing out of you, but I guess that wasn’t the only thing you wanted to be oozing out of you.”
“When last did you hear from my brother?”
He sighed heavily, hating the change of topic, “Since when did your brother ever speak to me? The last person I met which you know was Roseil and I can’t say I enjoyed that very much.” He stripped off his left boot to reveal four toes, “She chopped off my last toe.”
“Why would you meet her?”
He scowled, “You think me an idiot, don’t you? Do you truly believe that I would seek her out to tell her how much I missed her? Quite frankly, I do not.” He paused, and spoke in a low voice, “I think something’s wrong with the realms. I visited my birth-hell to discover a new species of demons walking amongst us. There’s practically harmless but something feels very off about them. Like my people are somehow underestimating. I traveled to a few other hells where I’ve noticed newer species there as well.” He shrugged, “I don’t know, it’s strange.”
If what he was saying was true, then perhaps he was right. There was something larger at play here.
Claude popped back on his boots, “I was traveling through Roseil’s birth-hell, Viriot. She’s a guard to the King now. Saw her fighting against this creature so I helped because he seemed like she was getting her ass handed to her.”
I let out a small laugh, unable to believe that.
“I’m telling you,” Claude sterned, “The creature wasn’t normal. It spoke our tongue including the language of the seven sins. The bitch thought I brought it after I helped her kill it, that’s when she attacked me when another showed up.”
This sudden information concerned me. Not that I should care about what happened within the realms but because it reminded me of the creature encountered back in the cave in the Otherworld. No creature could have been able to seep through there. And most importantly, it knew who I was. Came after me. What did it want? What did it know? I recalled how it mentioned I didn’t know about something. So, what didn’t I know? My sole focus was regaining my former strength but for how long would I be trying to regain my suppressed powers? The more I killed as a demon the more strength I gained but I was growing weary of myself. And the council was growing bolder as time went on. Damn these Gods.
To make matters worse, Mathias’s sudden arrival with the human complicated things much more. I open the palm of my hand to reveal two strands of her hair I needed to perform the spell. I needed to figure out who she was and why she was here. I needed to understand that familiarity I felt a few minutes ago.
